SUPERNATURAL: Misha Collins Talks Castiel’s Reunion With Metatron

November 4, 2015 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

supernatural

Metatron hasn’t been spotted on SUPERNATURAL since April, but the former Scribe of God will be making a return appearance in the next episode.

With the Darkness now unleashed upon the world and even the majority of existing angels and demons rather clueless about how to stop it, Sam recently suggested that Metatron may have valuable information that could help the Winchesters in their fight against this new (old) evil. Was the former scribe privy to any helpful tips from God and his archangels about how they defeated the Darkness? That’s what Sam is hoping. But Metatron disappeared in to the wind when Castiel and Sam removed his grace and left him human.

However, it turns out that he may not be very good at hiding. Apparently Metatron has been working as a videographer at a local news station and while he’s generally behind the scenes, a reflection reveals his whereabouts and sends Castiel off to find the former angel.

During a recent visit to the SUPERNATURAL set in Vancouver, actor Misha Collins wouldn’t tell us exactly what Metatron tells Castiel when the pair are reunited, but he did say that Cas feels a bit conflicted about Metatron.

“Metatron is more or less human now, which is a burden that Cas has had to bear in the past,” Collins teased. “And I think Cas feels a certain amount of empathy. While Cas is not a huge fan of Metatron, I think he ultimately ends up feeling a little bit of empathy for him because he’s experiencing the human experience for the first time. And all of its difficulties.”

Hrm….does he feel enough empathy for him to let him go or will he return Metatron to the angels, who are clearly ostracizing Cas as a result of him helping to break Metatron out of Heaven’s jail. Whatever Cas decides, we suspect the wily former angel might take this opportunity to mess with Castiel.

Don’t miss Metatron’s return to SUPERNATURAL on November 11 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. And stay tuned, because we’ll have more from Collins about Castiel before the next episode airs.

SUPERNATURAL Set Tour: Behind the Scenes of the Men Of Letters Bunker

November 3, 2015 By Clarissa 3 Comments

supernatural

While standing sets have never been a big part of SUPERNATURAL, the show has had a few locations that have been used frequently over the years. Bobby’s house, of course, was one such location, before it was destroyed. In season 8, the show introduced the Men of Letters bunker, which has served as a home base for the Winchester brothers since its introduction. Originally just noted as a “concrete bunker” by the writers, the SUPERNATURAL design team created a stunning set, with two rooms serving as the focal point. Those two rooms, according to SUPERNATURAL Art Director John Marcynuk, are known as the “command center” (the room with the lit map table) and “the vault” (the room that serves as a research library).

“We got the call about a month before it played [on air]. Maybe a month and a half. We had a very limited amount of time,” explained Marcynuk during a recent tour of the set at SUPERNATURAL’s Vancouver soundstages.

“Originally when they wrote this into the script, it was for an episode it never played in. It was in the episode ‘As Time Goes By’. They were supposed to come in at the end [of that episode] and [the writers] rewrote it. [Then Sam and Dean actually came in] at the beginning of ‘Everybody Hates Hitler’. What’s funny is that actually wasn’t the first time we shot it. We shot it for the very next episode [‘Trial and Error’] because there was some sort of actor availability issues. We flipped the episodes.”

“When we originally built it, it was just these two rooms [research library and control room]. But now you’ve seen other stuff. It’s kind of ever changing.” Since the inception of the set we have seen bedrooms for Sam and Dean added, as well as a kitchen, a “dungeon”, a shooting range and a garage (which, unlike the other rooms, was actually filmed on location). But while new rooms have been added, the original set itself hasn’t really changed. “The set’s three years old. It’s Supernatural’s Enterprise.”

Marcynuk is from Toronto. He said that there’s a water filtration plant on the east side of Toronto and part of the inspiration for some of the details of the bunker came from that site. It’s built into a hillside as well.

In terms of the overall build and design process for sets, Marcynuk said that the show is on an 8 day prep, an 8 day shoot schedule. “We get the scripts maybe 2-3 weeks before, so we have a general idea of what we think we’ll do before the director comes up. And then we can hit the ground running really quickly.”

Take a look through our photos below, along with some trivia provided by Marcynuk.

The “Vault”

Will they ever film a character touching a book and opening a secret wall that leads to a passage? “We designed it for such. We have space behind [some of the] bookshelves if they wanted to put in a secret panel. We’ve prepared for that [even though they haven’t written it yet].”

Sorry, SUPERNATURAL fans, but not all of the books are real.

The telescope at the back of “the vault” hasn’t really been featured that much in SUPERNATURAL as anything more than background. “It’s actually based on a real telescope from the 1950s. When we were looking for telescopes, you can’t find one [that really plays well on screen]. They don’t make these anymore. The [smaller top part] is a real telescope [but the set department thought it was underwhelming]. So we found a photo from the ’50s and we made [the bottom bigger part].” Thought it worked well because often telescopes have the smaller aiming telescope, as well as the larger magnifier part.

The mini-fridge was “added by Sam and Dean. They brought in the beer.”

The “Command Center”

The whole command center has a southwest feel — “A bit of an indigenous people feel”. The map on the wall is “not really of the United States. It’s really a map of all the reservations in the United States. So there’s this kind of First People’s symbology hidden in here.”

Sam’s Bedroom

According to Marcynuk, “Sam’s room and Dean’s room is the same set. We just redress it.” Dean’s bedroom had appeared a few times early in the bunker’s existence and they built it on the soundstage, but it wasn’t connected to the main bunker set in any way. “We then, just because of schedule, we had to pick it up and take it to a warehouse for ‘Remember the Titans’. Then we moved it back and connected it to the set [via a corridor].”

The Kitchen

The day we went to visit the kitchen, you could see curtains hanging from ceiling, which is how they light the sets. “Usually they put lights up top and [then the curtains below the lights] gives an even cast.”

The Hallway

They shot part of episode 10.03, which Jensen directed, in the corridor. The door marked “Electrical” is the door Dean actually broke to get through to his brother. The sets are usually designed for expansion, including things like the hallways. “You never know what they’re going to write.”

Favorite Sets and the Nature of Swing Sets on SUPERNATURAL

Marcynuk said that one of his favorite sets was “Crowley’s lair [in season 6 or 7] with the two iron columns. It played into a few seasons [and] led us into the Leviathan storyline. That was a nice one.”

“We mainly had non-standing sets. It was only three years ago we built this. Even Bobby’s sets, we reused Bobby’s sets for about three or four houses. Bobby’s set and Chuck’s set were the same set.” They changed three walls, but if you really looked closely, they’re the same set. That also wasn’t the first — or last — time they’ve changed around sets. Sets are reused constantly on the show. For example, the Men of Letters dungeon set has also been used as a storage room and was the shooting gallery from ‘Slumber Party’.

Has it ever pained him to take apart a set? “Not yet. It’s nice to do new stuff. It’s nice to be constantly reworking things and there’s sets [even now] that I just want to see go. Because we’ve used them. For us, it’s old….I think part of the charm of our show is that it’s never gotten bogged down in one place for too long. Bobby’s is gone, Rufus’ cabin is gone, Harvelle’s Roadhouse burned down. We’ve had them for a short amount of time and then they’re done. I think it’s better to keep your characters on the run.”

Motel Rooms

SUPERNATURAL has been notorious for having quirky motel rooms throughout its long run. “Some of them were awful. But that was part of our show, to make them different each time. And I don’t know what the final tally is, [but] we’ve done over 100.” Marcynuk thinks they’ve only filmed in 4 or 5 real motel rooms in the entire series. Some are up on the North Shore and one is at the city center downtown.

The Set for the 200th Episode

How much fun to make sets that looked like they were done by teens? “Not a lot of fun. Because we had to dumb down our design, like multiple times.” When they first built the Impala, they sent some sketches and had models made and it was “too beautiful” and they thought it wasn’t what kids would do. Had to dumb it down even further. Had to keep changing it to be even simpler, to the point where duck tape was holding on the season 1 search lights. Here’s a piece of trivia for you — those search lights are no longer on the car. They took them off the show because they were in the way. But they thought that if the kids were just working on the books they would have the search lights, so they put them back on. Some of the toy versions of the cars will have the search lights and some won’t (see the search lights on the car from a screenshot below).

SUPERNATURAL: Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles Talk Amara’s Bond With Dean and the Nature of the Darkness

October 29, 2015 By Clarissa 3 Comments

supernatural

The Winchesters took a bit of a break from the Darkness in the most recent episode of SUPERNATURAL, hitting the road for a good old fashioned case. But it turns out they couldn’t escape the force they have unleashed upon the earth and they learned that even run-of-the-mill monsters are frightened of the Darkness.

During a recent visit to the set of SUPERNATURAL in Vancouver, reporters sat down to talk with stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles about this season’s big bad, the brothers fighting side-by-side and more.

When asked about Dean’s connection to Amara, Ackles said that “we will see kind of that relationship a little bit more and see what exactly that relationship is. I don’t think that he knows what to make of it. I’m not sure that he understands the connection and why [he has it with her].” Be prepared for Dean to hide his nerves about this connection.

Related: See photos from episode 11.05 of SUPERNATURAL

Meanwhile, as the brothers fight together against a common foe, the actors were asked to give their thoughts on the nature of the Darkness and whether she (it?) is inherently evil. While Padalecki thinks that she is, Ackles was a bit more forgiving, explaining that it’s possible the Darkness “isn’t inherently evil, [but is maybe] opposite of what we know in the world as good. Or as light, so to speak. Which is why she is the Darkness…..I think it means she is out to bring darkness and whatever that means is yet to be determined.”

Padalecki and Ackles were also asked about the monsters who were frightened of the Darkness in “Baby” and the fact that they’re building up their forces to combat the Darkness. Will we see more of that? Padalecki joked that we’ll see “ghoul-pires at the bar with the angels and the demons”. Ackles went on to explain that we’ll continue to see unique alliances. “People are kind of getting their defences together. They’re forming these alliances and saying ‘listen, it’s not about you and me anymore, it’s about us and we’re going to lose all of this if we don’t join forces and man-up’. I think we’re going to see a little bit more of that in the future.”

Watch the interview with Padalecki and Ackles below and don’t miss the next new episode of SUPERNATURAL on November 4 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. You can also watch what the actors had to say about filming “Baby” and the return of Matt Cohen here.

SUPERNATURAL: Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki Talk “Baby” and a Special Return

October 28, 2015 By Clarissa 1 Comment

supernatural

SUPERNATURAL fans know how important the Impala is to the show and this week we finally got to see an episode from the car’s POV. During a recent visit to the SUPERNATURAL set in Vancouver, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki shared their thoughts on filming the episode.

The episode “was certainly different and unique,” according to Ackles. “It was the first ever [time] in 200 and something episodes that we shot like that,” Padalecki clarified. “It was a brand new style.” The boys went on to explain that the biggest and most time-consuming task with regards to filming “Baby” was rigging the cameras, which all showed unique angles in this episode (and don’t focus directly on the action like they would in a normal episode).

The return of Matt Cohen as John Winchester (or, perhaps, God masquerading as John Winchester?) was a nice surprise, said the actors. And Padalecki thought it was interesting to bring back Cohen, who has played Young John in several past episodes, instead of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who originated the role, because “it puts Sam in an even more awkward position. This wasn’t the dad that he knew, [it was the one] he met later in life. But it wasn’t the dad he knew, so it really set up Sam unawares” and then led into an emotional scene for the brothers.

For the actors, filming the Sam and Dean car “chick flick” moment was a nice one. “What a cool [thing], we never see the boys do this stuff and I can’t wait to see it,” Padalecki said. “But to me, that should be something we do more often. What a cool glimpse into the Winchesters and how they travel.”

Related: Ackles & Padalecki discuss Dean’s bond with Amara & the nature of the Darkness

Speaking of a cool glimpse, SUPERNATURAL’s Picture Car Coordinator Jeff Budnick told us during our set visit that they have a version of the Impala where the roof comes right off. “So that shot from [up top] is a cutaway car we have. Exact same car, but the roof comes off, the front comes off, the back comes off and all of the doors come off. It’s a cutaway car so we can get different camera angles. The floor comes out so we can get a shot up the leg.”

You may have also noticed how banged up the poor Impala was by the end of the episode. Budnick said that they messed up all of the Impalas they have on hand — except for the one he says is in the best condition of their fleet (which has 8 cars in total, with a ninth car used for parts). “This one was put away for that episode. This car is not even seen,” he explained when he took us to see the “mint condition” car. But for the ones that were destroyed, Budnick said that fake blood was everywhere in the cars, including staining the carpets. “I think five of [the cars] had to get new headliners, because of the cameras ripping through the headliners. [There we so many] cameras in the car and we had to put new carpets and the dashes got cracked. So it was a lot of work to get them all back to normal.” And Budnick also told us that they built a special rig in the trunk for “Baby” – “the sound guy rode around in the trunk of the car for a lot of the [interior car scenes].”

Meanwhile, Cas stepped into a research role in “Baby”, but that role seems short-lived, according to Misha Collins. When asked about about Cas being back in the “help the boys/figure stuff out role” in episode 11.04 and whether we would see more of that in the season to come, Collins said there’s “not a lot of that”. Sorry, fans!

Stay tuned for more from the SUPERNATURAL set, including more interviews with the actors and a behind the scenes look at the sets, props and VFX.

SUPERNATURAL Photos: A Historical Murder Site

supernatural

The Winchester brothers are going to tackle the legend of Lizzie Borden in an early November episode of SUPERNATURAL, but not in the way that you might think.

Sam and Dean head out on a case to investigate a series of murders at a local B&B. It turns out that the B&B also happens to be Lizzie Borden’s old home. You might think that Borden’s ghost is behind these killers, but a local man, Len (guest star Jared Gertner), actually tells the Winchesters that he saw a little girl around the hotel at the time of the murder. This leads the brothers to suspect that Amara is may be responsible for the deaths.

SUPERNATURAL Outtake: There’s Always Another Way

October 28, 2015 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

spn

Sam and Dean Winchesters know a lot about improvisation on SUPERNATURAL. When the “typical” plan to stop the Apocalypse didn’t work, the boys found another way. And that wasn’t the first time the brothers have have to figure out another route to take.

Related: Watch a sneak peek from this week’s SUPERNATURAL

In a new outtake featuring stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, we open with the brothers in the Impala, driving down a dark and rainy highway. And while their serious tones may fool you into thinking you’re watching a scene from an episode, don’t fall for their earnest voices. Because soon we realize it’s all just a cover for a ridiculous — and hilarious — attempt to find “the other way”.

SUPERNATURAL Sneak Peek: On the Road Again

October 28, 2015 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

supernatural

Sam and Dean Winchester put the Darkness in their rearview mirror and hit the road in this week’s SUPERNATURAL.

In “Baby”, the boys ditch the bunker to look for a case and Sam thinks they may have found one involving werewolves (although, later, Dean thinks they may be dealing with a werepire hybrid). This episode is a different one for the show, with the majority of the POV being that if the Impala itself. In other words, we’re going to see what the Winchesters’ car sees, from fight scenes to valet parking (which, trust me, Dean isn’t thrilled about using). Also expect to see a heart-to-heart between the Winchesters in the car as they succumb to a classic “chick flick” moment.

SUPERNATURAL airs on October 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Then come back here to see Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki dish on the episode.
