Invasion of the Body Snatchers! Stars Noah Wylie and Moon Bloodgood Deliver Fresh Intel on TNT’s FALLING SKIES

May 17, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

When TNT debuts its spooky sci-fi series FALLING SKIES on June 19th, it sets up a long-arcing story of how — after virtually the entire population of Earth has been killed off by an invading alien species — the remaining survivors are on the run, hiding, and fighting for their very existence.  With their numbers too few to really strike back, retreat is the only real option left — they must hide and survive, so that they may just live to fight another day.

The prominent theme of FALLING SKIES is the importance of family in its tale of relentless pursuit by a more sophisticated and ruthless species.  The aliens have not come just to kill and destroy — they are intent on occupying Earth.  This is their home now.  We are just the previous tenants that need to be eradicated.  But there is one caveat — they want our children.  They enslave the children and use them as mindless slave labor; forcing them to wear an insect-like device on their spine that allows the aliens to control them.  It not just a battle to hide and survive, the survivors must protect the children.

SMALLVILLE Scoop: Executive Producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders Discuss Tonight’s Epic Ending to a Remarkable 10 Year Journey

May 13, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 5 Comments

SMALLVILLE’s momentous journey from man-to-Superman has enthralled viewers for the past decade.  For any show, 10 years is remarkable by any measure, and for SMALLVILLE it is a simultaneous passing of the torch and the solidifying of a legacy.  Not wanting to leave the fans hanging or wanting for anything, executive producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson have made it their mission to jam-pack as much of the significant elements of both Superman-mythology and SMALLVILLE into this final season.  Then as the show came down to the wire, they tried to squish even more into the two-hour finale.  At a special sneak peek screening, members of the press were treated to a glimpse of what that finale will offer.  Suffice it to say, fans will be really happy.  In fact, there just might be shouts of joy and jubilation as each new surprise is unveiled.

In order to do justice to both the show, which spanned ten amazing years, Brian and Kelly took it upon themselves to re-watch not only the pilot episode, but also watched several other pivotal episodes to make sure that they hit all the right notes.  They wanted to ensure a heart-warming and promise-filled send off for a show that touched so many lives and provided countless hours of entertainment for the fans.  They also understood that it was not their job to conclude the Superman story, but rather to merge the worlds of SMALLVILLE and the overall Superman mythology.  Thus, their job was to build the bridge in the finale, not close the book.  The finale will be more of a hand-off between the two worlds – after all, the story of Clark Kent and Superman is just beginning.  So in the finale look for some long-lost familiar faces to pop-up and some long awaited iconic moments to finally be fulfilled.  That will be Brian and Kelly’s legacy and gift to the fans.  Blood, sweat and tears – all because they loved the show and the fans to make it as damn near perfect as possible.

Ask the Addict: Spoilers for HOUSE, NIKITA, BONES, SMALLVILLE & More!

May 12, 2011 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

Any idea as to whether or not Tom and Lynette are actually heading for splitsville on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES? — Jennifer
The TV Addict: It sure looks that way doesn’t it! And while we don’t pretend to know if Wisteria Lane’s most stable couple will actually go as far as to commence those dreaded divorce proceedings, what we can promise is that you won’t have to wait all summer to find out. “I believe we gain some closure,” said Tom’s portrayer Doug Savant during a recent one-on-one with the TV Addict. “This marriage and relationships in general are an ongoing evolution, but fans will be relieved to know that there is some closure to this particular issue.”

Any clues as to who will be ripping a hole in BONES’ heart tonight? — Madison
The TV Addict: Yes. But since we sure as heck aren’t about to risk the wrath of fellow countryman Hart Hanson by spilling the beans as to which character will find himself on the wrong end of sniper Jacob Ripkin Broadsky sight (Seriously, have you seen a Canadian get mad?) we will only go as far as to reveal that it’s a character that fans will most certainly scream “Nooooo!” over… followed by a quick reach for the tissues. Oh, and on the off chance you’re stopping off at a store in-between work and home, it might behoove you to stock up on tissues as tonight’s key death sends shockwaves throughout the entire team. Watch for a casket, flowers and a very unexpected song that may-or-may-not haunt you until Friday.

A Night of Tears and Laughter with BONES at the Paley Center

May 12, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 7 Comments

No matter how you look at it, BONES is a remarkable show. It deftly blends humor into some of the most tragic (and gory!) storylines to be portrayed on television. It also offers a delicate balance of familial friendship that has enchanted viewers for the past six seasons, and remarkably continues to lure in new viewers each week. For a show entering its seventh season, BONES is showing no signs of slowing down and — as this week’s heart-breaking episode will demonstrate once again – is creatively at the top of its game.

On May 9th, the Paley Center honored BONES and gave fans a chance to celebrate the show with creator/executive producer Hart Hanson, executive producer Stephen Nathan and cast members: Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin and T.J. Thyne. After a special screening of the May 12th episode “A Hole in the Heart,” the moderated panel provided some insight into what BONES is planning for its 7th season and the ever-elusive “will-they-or-wont-they” dance of Brennan and Booth. As the lights rose after the screening, there was not a dry-eye in the house. Watching an episode in which a beloved character dies is hard enough in the solitude of one’s own home – but to share in that momentous loss was a collective grieving experience that seemed to affect everyone all that much more. It was also a special gift to the fans who had flown in from around the globe – Biba (Brazil), Claudia (Belgium), Nicole (Canada), Anne (Boston), Diana (Texas), Joanna (Texas) and Jenna (Sacramento) – who were not only able to celebrate the show together, but who could also console each other over the loss of a fan-favorite character.

Inside FRINGE’s Puzzle Box: Has FRINGE Lost Its Heart and Its Hero?

May 10, 2011 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

As the final seconds of FRINGE’s third season wrapped, it gave fans a lot to think about and wrap their brains around until the show returns next Fall.  For a show notorious for its game-changing season finales, the third season finale was no different.  While the first season introduced the alternate universe, the second season gave us the doppelganger body-swap, and the third season gave us a glimpse at a bleak future and the possible loss of one of their own as Peter Bishop’s entire timeline was wiped-out.  FRINGE does not mess around.  It will do anything, go anywhere that its fantastical story takes it — which means it has taken us on a journey that has been extraordinary and mind-blowing all at once.

So in those final moments of this season’s finale, in an episode appropriately titled, “The Day We Died,” the most crucial clue about what is going on for that final hour was revealed as two of the Observers sat talking.  The first Observer noted, “You were right.  They don’t remember Peter.”  And the other insightfully responded, “How could they?  He never existed.  He served his purpose.”  WTF?!  Did we really just hear that correctly?

Ask the Addict: Spoilers for ROOKIE BLUE, TERRA NOVA, WHITE COLLAR, SUPERNATURAL & More!

May 5, 2011 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

Any word on how ROOKIE BLUE plans on kicking off its sophomore season this June? — Amy
The TV Addict: We see your word, and raise you two more. Which is to say, when last summer’s surprise smash returns this June 16 on ABC (Global TV in Canada) it will be doing so “with a bang.” That’s the good news. The bad news is said bang spells bad news — of the bullet in the chest variety — to one of the series regulars pictured in the above photo. Gulp!

Recently you teased that when ENTOURAGE kicks off its eighth and final season, it will do so following a stint in rehab for our leader of the pack. Which raises the question, upon his release, will Vinnie’s career trajectory be that of the Robert Downey Jr. or Lindsay Lohan variety? — David
The TV Addict: Unfortunately for those hoping Vince’s tabloid troubles were left in rehab following last season’s arrest shocker, stop hoping now. As it should be, the road to recovery will be a long an arduous one made all the more difficult when Vince is called into question by the LAPD following the death of a friend. Double Gulp!

Trapped In Hell On THE GOOD WIFE: One Betrayal Too Many

May 5, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 6 Comments

What does one do when faced with the ultimate betrayal? This week on THE GOOD WIFE, Alicia Florrick’s perfectly, yet precariously, balanced personal life shattered in an instant as one name echoed in her brain:  Leela.  It was supposed to be the night to celebrate her husband’s successful election as State Attorney, and the beginning of their new life as the power couple they once were.  But with one cruel twist of fate, those foolish hopes came crashing down to reality.

For the past two years, Alicia has been frozen in time.  She has been trying to figure out if her lying, cheating husband deserved another chance — or if she should bail and start her life afresh.  It was a long period of treading water.  Uncertain if she should honor her wedding vows which her husband had so casually tossed aside, Alicia waited.  She stood by Peter when he was indicted and sent to prison; she was faithful to him as he appealed his prison sentence; and she was there for him when he was finally released.  She may not have so quickly welcomed him back into her bed, but she allowed him to return home — to be a father to their children, to try to regain the voter’s trust and gave him a second chance to win her heart, and he did.

Even after learning all of Peter’s deep, dark secrets — the bribes, the blackmail, the infidelities, the betrayal — none cut so deep as hearing the name Leela.

Losing Momentum Can Be Detrimental to Television Shows: How to Stop the Hemorrhaging

May 3, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 10 Comments

A funny thing happens this time of year on television:  ratings go down. With primetime shows wrapping up for the season and on hiatus until Fall, one would think that TV viewers would be flocking to the TV’s and making sure to savor every last bit of their favorite shows.  But this is just not the case.  In fact, it is as if viewers are experiencing fatigue or burn-out.  Ratings begin slipping sometime between January and March and then steadily sink through early May.  Then a rare blip occurs in the ratings when the finales air as record numbers of viewers typically tune-in for that final episode.  But for a television programmer and TV showrunner, Spring time is a ratings nightmare.  It is also known as “show killer season”; and for shows on the bubble, the sagging viewership can pop the bubble and result in cancellation.

As the typical television series only runs 22-24 episodes each Fall through Spring season, it is a challenge for a programmer to determine how to best space out the episodes so that they are sprinkled throughout the long 8-9 month time period.  When you only have the equivalent of 5-6 months of episodes, they have to be spread out carefully or there are periods of short hiatus (typically 6-8 weeks from mid-December to late January or early February) and then another 3-4 week hiatus either in March or April.  The benefit of these breaks is two-fold:  it allows television shows a chance to catch-up – since it takes a good 8-10 days to film most episodes and they are running behind by Christmas — and it also allows program schedulers timeslots in which they can air holiday specials and other stand-alone shows.

But, for viewers, gaps and hiatuses are confusing — they break our concentration or love-affair with a show.  Shows like THE EVENT and V are heavily serialized and it requires quite a bit of concentration to remember where these shows last left off and what they were about.  Then there are shows like RAISING HOPE and COUGAR TOWN, which lure viewers with their funny antics and engaging characters, but find a hard time luring back their fans after extended breaks.  Even shows like CHUCK, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, NIKITA and HELLCATS have found themselves challenged to woo back their viewers who act like the first bloom of love has fallen to the wayside and they merely shrug at the idea of falling back in love again.

DOCTOR WHO Taps Into Its Inner Shakespeare

April 28, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

As the British time-traveling adventure series DOCTOR WHO returned last weekend with the debut of its new season, it both surprised and shocked viewers.  Channeling the Bard himself, it wove a tightly woven tale of comedy and tragedy.  Within the first few minutes, it reintroduced its principal characters as they were happily scattered throughout time and space, then cleverly brought them together for a seemingly idyllic picnic beside a desert lake.  But, as a space-suit clad astronaut rose out of the calm waters, the illusion of peace was shattered in an instant:  The Doctor was shot and killed before our eyes.  As any true fan knows, The Doctor cannot die; he simply regenerates.  But, in a twist that felt simultaneously gut-wrenching and heart-breaking, we watched in horror as The Doctor futilely tried to regenerate – and with the echo of another bullet, our hearts shattered into a thousand pieces.  Could this truly be the end of an icon that has graced television screens for nearly half a century?  What in the world was Steven Moffat thinking to dream up a scenario where The Doctor dies?

Under the British TV Spell: How British Television Shows are Seducing American Viewers

April 26, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 6 Comments

Last year, when I put together my annual top 10 list of TV shows for 2010, I noticed an unusual anomaly:  3 of the top 5 were British TV shows (DOCTOR WHO, SHERLOCK, LUTHER); and in 2011, it is likely that number will rise to 5 out of 5 with the return of TORCHWOOD and the introduction to DOWNTON ABBEY.

This is very curious since I have always been an avid fan of American television and thought I merely dabbled in my love affair with British television.  But looking over the past few years, there is a fascinating trend with British television, offering more than a handful of my favorite television shows.  As British television began moving across the pond, I have found myself enamored with includes such shows as:  MERLIN, PRIMEVAL, BEING HUMAN, ROBIN HOOD, HEX, SPOOKS (aka MI-5), LIFE ON MARS and THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES – and clearly, I am not the only one.
