Ask the Addict: Spoilers for GOSSIP GIRL, THE GOOD WIFE, GLEE, GREY’S ANATOMY & More!

April 21, 2011 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

Do you have anything positive to report for those of us McSteamy fans who aren’t quite on board with the whole Lexie/Jackson direction GREYS ANATOMY has taken? — Amy
The TV Addict: Don’t shoot the messenger, but if the (above) photo we’ve just obtained teasing the wedding between Callie and Arizona on the upcoming May 5th episode of GREY’S ANATOMY is any indication, one sure as heck doesn’t need to be a facial recognition expert akin to LIE TO ME’s Dr. Cal Lightman to guess that Lexie and Jackson seem to be doing okay, at least for the time being.

Any word on what ROYAL PAINS has up their sleeve this summer? — Mike
The TV Addict: Not so much, except to say that if the upcoming summer season of ROYAL PAINS is half as funny as the episode titles we’re hearing come out of the writer’s room, fans are in for a real treat. At least as evidence by the third episode of the season which is titled, “The Shaw/Hank Redemption” Seriously PSYCH writers, watch your back.

As much as I’m digging the new girl Charlie on GOSSIP GIRL, I’d dig her that much more if she came in between Dan and Blair. Anything you can tease? — Amber
The TV Addict: Having seen Monday’s episode we are sorry to report that Charlie does not in fact come between Dan and Blair… at least not yet. That said, fans will be happy to know that “Dair’s” forward momentum relationship wise takes a step backwards on Monday’s episode thanks to a former flame who returns to sweep Blair off her feet.

A Dance With the Devil: HOUSE’s Gentle Goodbye to Martha M. Masters

April 21, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 3 Comments

Entering the world of HOUSE is like living in the danger-zone.  As Dr. Martha M. Masters found out the hard way this week, stepping into the shoes of Dr. Gregory House comes at a price.  While it may not have cost her medical license, it did take a piece of her soul.

Dr. House may not always be ethical or moral, but he will save your life — if you let him.  Being a lying, self-deceiving bastard — House knows exactly who he is dealing with when it comes to stubborn, myopic and self-deceived patients.  In fact, it is his personal credo that “everybody lies.”  He knows this is true simply because it is how he lives; in order to get what he wants and throughout every day of his life, he lies to himself and to everyone around him.  Call it manipulation or egotism to the core, but one cannot deny he gets good results.

After all, one does not get the best diagnostician in the world and then hope that he won’t discover your deep dark secrets.  Secrets are what House thrives on — whether relevant to the medical case at hand or not, that is the price of admission to receive such extraordinary care.  If you are a patient of Dr. House, it is because there is already something exceptional about you — your medical condition either intrigues him, or you do.  You are his pet-project and favorite chew toy for a while.  It is both a blessing and a curse.

The Secret to Television Success: Why some TV shows are succeeding when others are failing?

April 19, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 2 Comments

With the 2010-2011 television season wrapping up and a large number of shows getting pink slips, it leads us to wonder why some shows are succeeding in the face of great competition on the television landscape.

Just look at the top scripted television series, it is a menagerie.  It is hard to pin-point the one thing that keeps viewers tuning in.  It is a charismatic character, a gripping storyline, the novelty of concept, or simply that it offers “comfort food” to a viewing audience craving a specific kind of TV show?

An Ode to MERLIN: The Little Show Stealing Hearts On Both Sides of the Pond

April 14, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 6 Comments

The British fantasy series MERLIN not only delivers sweeping romance week after week, it continues to sweep millions of fans off their feet — both in the U.K. and the U.S.  And last week, as its third season came to a masterful conclusion, fans finally got what they have been waiting for: Arthur and Guinevere, Excalibur, the Knights of the Round Table, Lancelot, the Lady in the Lake and the rise of the evil sorceress Morgana.

In the coming-of-age story of a young teenage boy hiding his remarkable magical abilities in order to guide and protect a young prince who would one day be the greatest king to rule Camelot, MERLIN has seen the fledgling magician struggle beneath his incredible legacy.  In turns an odd mixture of the classic “ugly duckling” fable intertwined with fantastic elements of any Disney adventure tale, MERLIN has always been a delightful family show that enchanted viewers with a new take on an old story.

So as fans watched the young sorcerer apprentice fine-tune his skills and master both the magical arts and the finer arts of social camouflage so that his secret would not put him in the cross-hairs of a vengeful King Uther who has banned sorcery and will behead anyone practicing it, the saga slowly drew out the story in such a fashion that fans have followed each breadcrumb to see where it took them.

In the third season finale aptly entitled “The Coming of Arthur,” their faithfulness was rewarded.  While in no way the end of this magnificent journey, it was the culmination of many glorious moments.  The episode was jam-packed with as many pivotal and awe-inspiring scenes as possible — all of which are key elements of the classic tale of Arthur and Merlin.  To see each so intricately woven together was a testament to the fine craftsmanship of the writers who endeavored to make the episode as epic as possible.

From the opening scene of Morgana sitting on the throne and demanding allegiance from the Knights of Camelot to the final moment with Merlin placing Excalibur in its rightful stone, “The Coming of Arthur” was awesome to behold.

Oh MERLIN, let me count the ways I love thee: [Read more…]

Bubble Watch 2011: Parting in Such Sweet Sorrow

April 12, 2011 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

Each year, it is always the same.  As April and May come around, the clock ticks down on a number of television shows whose time has run out.  While some shows will go quietly into the night, others will feel like we have been slapped in the face by a bucket of cold water.  But no matter whether it is an expected death or an unexpected sudden demise, a number of viewers and fans will still mourn the loss of these shows.

The Fall 2010 season began with the heavily hyped premiers of such cutting-edge dramas as LONE STAR and MY GENERATION — only to find that a few short weeks later, they were nowhere to be found on the broadcast schedule.  Others such as OUTLAW, UNDERCOVERS, RUNNING WILDE and THE WHOLE TRUTH lingered a while longer, and then also quietly disappeared.

Then less quietly and with much more gnashing of teeth, were the shocking cancellations of CAPRICA, STARGATE: UNIVERSE, and TERRIERS — and somewhere in the midst of those wild outcries were even more shows falling beneath the guillotine, such as: RUBICON, LIFE UNEXPECTED, UNNATURAL HISTORY, TOWER PREP, CHASE, and THE GOOD GUYS.

The Seven Wonders of WonderCon 2011: Behind the Music of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, PUSHING DAISIES, TRUE BLOOD, BONES & More!

April 8, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

At the “Behind the Music: Composing for Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy” panel, presented by CW3PR, fans heard from some of the most gift musical talents on television today about how they entered the realm of musical composition.

Moderated by Bryan Fuller (Pictured above, left), creator of such gems as DEAD LIKE ME and PUSHING DAISIES, the panel consisted of Nathan Barr (TRUE BLOOD), Jim Dooley (PUSHING DAISIES, Pictured above, right), Scott Starrett (THE EVENT, DROP DEAD DIVA), Marco Beltrami (“V,” 3:10 to Yuma), Michael Suby (THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, KYLE XY), and Sean Callery (24, BONES).

Each credited their current success to sheer luck. But, as anyone who attended this extraordinary panel can attest, luck only plays a small part. Just listening to the melodious sounds they create for some of the hottest shows on television made it abundantly clear that these men are nothing short of genius. They are the Mozarts of our generation. They create the sounds and music that invoke the emotional resonance that we all feel watching the shows we love. For what would “True Blood” be without the curiously intoxicating mix of Cajun tunes back-dropped by something almost otherworldly? Or would 24 have felt as intense without the piercingly riveting sounds reminding us of the ever-present clock ticking down?

The 7 Wonders of WonderCon 2011 (Part 2 feat. V, HUMAN TARGET and BREAKING IN)

April 7, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

V
Appearing for the V panel was creator/producer Scott Rosenbaum, along with stars Elizabeth Mitchell and Marc Singer. Each appeared stunned and grateful at the loyal fans’ appreciation and was effusive in turn for the dedication and support. While the show is still technically “on the bubble” and a third season in no way guaranteed, they were still excited about the possibility of another season and had lots of ideas to share about what they hope to see next.

As Elizabeth Mitchell candidly admitted, “There’s something in me that wants to talk less and fight more!” After brutally losing her son and holding her ex-husband as he died in her arms, surely Erica Evans’ days of hiding in the shadows and tentatively striking back against the Visitors is over. Thus, should a third season be granted, Elizabeth is looking forward to kicking some well-deserved alien butt!

Ask the Addict: Spoilers for THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, PRIVATE PRACTICE, NIKITA, GREY’S ANATOMY, DEGRASSI & More!

March 31, 2011 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

Your recent streak of DEGRASSI scoop has been nothing short of astounding. Care to keep the streak alive? — Mandy
The TV Addict: Despite the fact that we would very much prefer you characterize our recent streak of DEGRASSI scoop as “remarkable” rather than “astounding,” we are more than happy to oblige. If only to put to rest one of the big concerns we’ve been hearing from a handful of DEGRASSI fans since we broke the news about cast additions for the upcoming eleventh season. Rest assured, said additions will in no way take away screen time from the current cast you’ve come to know and love. So much so that upcoming eleventh season episodes will have one student of the male persuasion tackle the taboo that is shoplifting, another who is no stranger to trouble finding herself confronted with cocaine, while a third fan favorite is forced to deal with the baggage that comes when two squabbling parents fail to handle their divorce as maturely as one might hope.

Any PRIVATE PRACTICE scoop? — Jennifer
Not-so-fun-fact: Fans have not seen the last of Charlotte’s harrowing rape storyline, which will return to the forefront in the upcoming PRIVATE PRACTICE season finale when Charlotte is forced to re-live her terrifying ordeal in an effort to help treat another survivor.

A Twist of FRINGE: Amidst Tragedy An Unexpected Love Story Blooms

March 31, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 23 Comments

In the most recent episode of FRINGE entitled “Bloodlines,” Fauxlivia’s pregnancy took a dramatic turn after she was kidnapped and her baby’s gestation period medically accelerated.  While speeding up and manipulating Fauxlivia’s pregnancy was stunning enough, the real story was about another revelation:  Agent Lincoln Lee’s confession of his love for her.

Turning the tables on fans that had been bemoaning the discovery that Fauxlivia was carrying Peter’s child, FRINGE took the extremely unpopular storyline and turned it into a fan-favorite.  For in one fell swoop, it unmasked Lincoln’s feelings for Fauxlivia and created a star-crossed love affair for which fans could suddenly root.  There had always been a hint of special feelings on Lincoln’s side for Fauxlivia, but as long as she was happily involved with her boyfriend Frank, Lincoln kept his feelings to himself and allowed her to live in peace.

Yet fate delivered an unexpected twist for them all when the Alt-Fringe Division sent Fauxlivia into our universe replacing Olivia and claimed our Olivia as their own using false memories to convince her that she was Fauxlivia.  That switch had long-term ramifications as Fauxlivia fell in love with Peter in our universe and Olivia struggled with her identity in the alt-verse leading Lincoln to believe that there may be a chance for him as he continued to watch protectively over her after her breakdown.
