FRINGE: Looking Through the Alt-Verse Lens, Who Died and Broke Our Hearts?

April 13, 2012 By Tiffany Vogt 4 Comments

Last season FRINGE offered the brutal premise of Olivia Dunham having been kidnapped and replaced by her alt-verse doppelganger Fauxlivia, only to find out that Fauxlivia was later pregnant with Peter Bishop’s child – a revelation that strained Olivia and Peter’s relationship on all levels in a non-stop roller-coaster ride of alt-verse shenanigans.  The one silver-lining from all of that was how it ended up bringing Fauxlivia and the alt-verse Lincoln Lee together for one magnificent scene in which it hinted a future where they could be a family: Lincoln, Fauxlivia and baby Henry. (Related: “A Twist of FRINGE: Amidst Tragedy An Unexpected Love Story Blooms”)  However, the 3rd season finale threw a monkey-wrench into everyone’s futures when Peter activated “the machine” and effectively erased himself out of existence.  (Related: “Inside FRINGE’s Puzzlebox: Has FRINGE Lost Its Heart and Its Hero?”)

The 4th season then premiered to a world where Peter Bishop did not exist in our universe or the alt-verse.  The only saving grace was that Olivia and Walter’s love for Peter was so strong that even though Peter had been erased, traces of him remained in their memories.  It was the strength of their love and those residual memories that provided a life-line which Peter clung to and allowed him to find a loophole in time and he re-emerged for a second time in Reiden Lake with the help of The Observer September, who only wanted to fix his mistake from all those years before.  So this season has been less a roller-coaster and more a journey of self-identity. Peter had to find his proper place in our universe again.  It was unsettling for him and for viewers when he finally returned and no one remembered him.  The man who had been vital to both universes before was suddenly an anomaly – a “man out of time” and which no one remembered.  But Peter’s mere existence began to reformulate his world around him.  Those memory traces in Olivia and Walter’s minds began to slowly resurface.  They also began emerging as the Olivia and Walter that Peter knew and loved as well.  Then in the episode “A Short Story About Love,” The Observer September finally confesses to Peter that Peter is already home, which sends Peter rushing back to Olivia who has regained her memories. A Celebration of THE MIDDLE with Stars Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer

April 11, 2012 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Shows that exemplify the “everyman” don’t come around that often. But one wonderful and warm exception is ABC’s comedy series THE MIDDLE. Rather than depict a super-human family genetically engineered to accomplish their life’s bliss, THE MIDDLE recognizes and celebrates the kind of family that most of us probably have – one where money is tight, the children are a shade off from “normal,” and yet everyone undeniably loves each other through the thick-and-thin — and more often than not, finds a way to make lemonade when handed a basket of lemons.  In fact, THE MIDDLE seeks to cherish and commemorate what makes being a family a special joy in today’s world of everyday stress, pressure and worries.

At a special event in its honor at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, key cast members of THE MIDDLE stopped to chat about their family-friendly show. [Read more…]

From CASTLE to BONES: Is the MOONLIGHTING Curse Still Relevant Today?

April 10, 2012 By Tiffany Vogt 6 Comments

In Hollywood, there is no more dreaded catch phrase than “The Moonlighting Curse.”  For those old enough to remember, MOONLIGHTING was the hot comedy-drama of the 1980’s, starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis.  The show consistently scored high ratings until one disastrous night – its core characters David and Maddie slept together at the end of the show’s third season.  After achieving its highest ratings ever, it was all downhill from there – at least in the ratings.  It went from 9th place the Nielsen list to 14th  place during its next season, and then was cancelled after limping through one more final season.  Ever since then, shows that are dependent on the “will they or won’t they” hooks to their premise tend to religiously avoid killing the cash-cow and make sure their hot couples never get together, or to postpone it as long as humanly possible (such as waiting until the series finale).   The thought being that popping the “romantic-tension bubble” spells doom for any television show. Russell Hornsby and Reggie Lee Talk GRIMM and Where the Mythology is Going

April 6, 2012 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

In the GRIMM world, fairytales do not have happy endings and supernatural creatures are not exactly warm-and-cuddly.  In fact, most are down-right dangerous and would just as soon have you for dinner, rather than over for dinner.  For Detective Nick Burkhardt things have gotten a whole lot more interesting after he found out that he can see these creatures in their true form and discovering out that his ancestry makes him a “grimm” – the one thing that all the creatures fear the most.  But Nick does not want to simply kill the creatures like his ancestors, he wants to be impartial unless provoked.  He will let everyone live in peace so long as no one breaks any laws.  He is a new kind of “grimm” and no one knows what to make of him.  But with such a powerful secret to protect, Nick’s partner Hank and his law enforcement peers have been kept in the dark.  Yet after last week’s tense episode in which it was revealed that Sergeant Wu had an adverse reaction to the love-potion cookies intended for Detective Hank Griffin, there are a few burning questions to be answered.  Fortunately, in a recent press conference call, co-stars Russell Hornsby and Reggie Lee were on hand to provide some answers.
