For Canadian Eyes Only: 5 Ways Bell Media, Rogers and Shaw Can Save Themselves

November 20, 2015 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

hi-bell-media-852

if this week’s unfortunate culling of hundreds of jobs (and counting) by Bell Media is an indication of anything, it’s that broadcasters in Canada are not doing well. Advertising is down, cord cutting is up and it would appear that things are going to get a lot worse before they get a lot better (Just ask the newspaper industry). As such, your very own TV Addict thought now might be as good a time as any to offer up some unsolicited advice to Canadian corporations. Namely, Bell Media (CTV), Rogers (CityTV) and Shaw (Global).

Stop living in denial
With much of Canada changing the way they watch television and consume media, Canadian broadcasts face a choice. You can (a) watch your industry quietly crumble like newspapers and the music industry did over the past two decades, or (b) take a page from Wayne Gretzky, who was once famously quoted as saying when asked about the secret to his NHL success, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” I mean hello, it worked for Netflix. Who rather than simply sit back and milk every last dollar from their traditional mail-order DVD business, saw the writing on the wall and very quickly pivoted to a streaming based model.

Create your own revenue streams
Each and every June, Bell Media, Rogers and Shaw shell out millions of dollars in an attempt to attract eyeballs and ad dollars to their new Fall season. Unfortunately each and every spring, the majority of the shows are summarily cancelled, leaving Bell Media, Rogers and Shaw with little to show for it. Conversly, their American counterparts (ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC) are laughing all the way to the bank because they managed to limit their exposure by selling, say HEROES REBORN as an example, to hundreds of different countries across the globe. In short, with ad revenue and eyeballs down, the only real money to be made in broadcasting is in owning your own intellectual property, or in the parlance of the industry “format.” Sure, it may be cheaper and easier to fill your schedule with CHICAGO SANITATION, but it’s far less profitable in the long run.

Use television as a loss leader
If Bell Media, Rogers and Shaw insist on clinging to cable television — and considering I still get phone calls attempting to sell me “home phone” I suspect they’re not quite ready to let go — they should, at the very least, lower the price! Now I know “lower the price” may be a foreign concept to executives at these companies, but here’s the reality of the situation. Bell Media, Rogers and Shaw may not be selling as many clients on home phone and cable anymore, but they are no doubt making it up with internet and cellular data packages. Two must-haves that could result in even high profits as a result of our country’s needlessly restrictive and expensive bandwidth caps. What’s more, I’ve never understood how every show that airs on, say CTV for example, isn’t available online with the exact same commercials (for cord cutters), or commercial free (for those who still subscribe to cable). Why do Bell MEdia, Rogers and Shaw make it so hard to legally watch their content. Which brings me to…

Your online portals (suck!)
Nobody likes getting punished for playing by the rules, which is why an important part in looking towards the future is improving your online portals. Do you have any idea how annoying and infuriating it is to attempt to catch up on your favoruite shows through your Bell Media, Rogers and Shaw’s official online outlets? The same ads repeat ad nauseam, shows often don’t load and worst of all, if you have to stop watching for any reason you basically have to restart from the beginning. Seriously folks, the legal option should be the best and most friction free one, because you don’t want me — or someone less ethical — to start Googling the non-legal alternatives.

Think Different
This week I purchased the new Apple TV [Review coming soon]. Like most Apple products, it just works (and brilliantly so!). You know what doesn’t work? My antiquated and infuriating-to-use Rogers digital box. Which is curious, because on the cellular side, you giant media conglomerates have actually got it right. Canadians gladly (or perhaps begrudgingly) shell out thousands of dollars annually to use your cellular and data on the phone of choice! Which raises the slightly awkward albeit painfully obvious question as to why don’t you follow the same model with cable boxes. Team up with Apple (or if you must, Google or Microsoft) and offer those who haven’t yet cut the cord an amazing experience. You might be surprised what we’d pay for if it was an Apple-esque amazing expierence.

2015 Emmy Predictions: Who Will Win and Who Should Win!

September 18, 2015 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Emmys_2015_ad_F3_simp_hires1

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! With the 67th PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS mere days away, Emmy speculation is off the charts! Fun Fact: Even Vegas is weighing in with [this online sportsbook] pitting MAD MEN and GAME OF THRONES against each other as strong favorites. With a solid combination of old favorites and new faces it’s going to be difficult to pin down the nights winners. Fortunately, I love a challenge. So without further ado here are my two cents on how the night is going to play out…

Outstanding Drama Series
HOUSE OF CARDS (Netflix)
GAME OF THRONES (HBO)
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (Netflix)
MAD MEN (AMC)
HOMELAND (Showtime)
DOWNTON ABBEY (PBS)
BETTER CALL SAUL (AMC)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Any show but the hot mess that has become HOUSE OF CARDS.
Will Win: MAD MEN, if Emmy Voters don’t jump at the opporutnity to award this “Cable Ace” we’ll eat our vintage stylish 60’s era Don Draper hat!
Should Win: GAME OF THRONES, this HBO series has not only redefined what viewers demand from their premium cable television shows, it defies convention by continually getting better with age.

Outstanding Comedy Series
MODERN FAMILY (ABC)
VEEP (HBO)
LOUIE (FX)
TRANSPARENT (Amazon)
UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT (Netflix)
PARKS AND RECREATION (NBC)
SILICON VALLEY (HBO)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Any show but MODERN FAMILY, which much to our chagrin, has aged about as gracefully as their once adorable pint-sized kiddie contingent.
Will Win: TRANSPARENT may not have been the most laugh-out-loud comedy of the bunch, but it is the kind of conversation starter that can not only change lives and attitudes, but reinforce the importance of television as a medium.
Should Win: In a crowded field of complex and oftentimes dark and dramatic “comedies,” we’d be happy to see a show that prioritizes funny walk away with a statue. See: VEEP, SILIVON VALLEY and/or PARKS AND RECREATION

Outstanding Actress in Comedy
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)
Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie)
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Rec)
Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback)
Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Any actress whose title character doesn’t start with Nurse and end with Jackie.
Will Win: With a Peabody Award-winning television show and hit movie under her belt, its Amy Schumer’s world and we’re just living in it (Bonus Points: Real life friends with Jennifer Larence, I mean if that isn’t award worthy what is!)
Should Win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus may play President on TV but she’s the first lady of funny in our heart.

Outstanding Actor in Comedy
Louis C.K. (Louie)
Anthony Anderson (Blackish)
Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)
Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth)
William H. Macy (Shameless)
Don Cheadle (House of Lies)
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Don Cheadle, who talents are going to waste on the silly and insignificant HOUSE OF LIES.
Will Win: Despite a resume littered with memorable characters, Jeffrey Tambor gave a performance of a lifetime.
Should Win: Have you seen TRANSPARENT?

Outstanding Actress in Drama
Robin Wright (House of Cards)
Taraji P. Henson (Empire)
Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder)
Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black)
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
Claire Danes (Homeland)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Robin Wright, Seriously. What is up with shows that start with “House of…” this season?
Will Win: Taraji P Henson may not have given the most traditionally “dramatic” performance, but Emmy voters will want to recognize last season’s biggest (only?) broadcast hit. Also. Cookie FTW!
Should Win: Each and every week of ORPHAN BLACK is a master class on acting thanks to the talent of Tatiana Maslany. Also. Canada FTW!

Outstanding Actor in Drama
Kevin Spacey (House of Cards)
Kyle Chandler (Bloodline)
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom)
Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul)
Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Jeff Daniels. And yes, in case you’re wondering, we’re still angry about what Aaron Sorkin delivered with THE NEWSROOM. Awful. Simply awful.
Will Win: Jon Hamm cannot go down in history as the Susan Lucci of Primetime Emmys.
Should Win: Jon Hamm was a major part of the success that was MAD MEN and desereves to go down in history as an Outstanding Actor in a Drama series.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in Comedy
Niecy Nash (Getting On)
Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Allison Janney (Mom)
Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live)
Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory)
Gaby Hoffmann (Transparent)
Jane Krakowski (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Anna Chlumsky (Veep)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Julie Bowen, whose father/daughter work storyline is the worst thing to happen to MODERN FAMILY since those once adorable kids went through puberty.
Will Win: Allison Janney is da bomb!
Should Win: Allison Janney is also The Jackal!

Outstanding Supporting Actor in Comedy
Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
Adam Driver (Girls)
Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele)
Ty Burrell (Modern Family)
Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Tony Hale (Veep)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Adam Driver who inexplcibaly managed to get recognized over series creator, star, writer, director Lena Dunham!
Will Win: Tituss Burgess is the best thing to come out of the mind of Tina Fey since her Sarah Palin impersonation.
Should Win: Keegan-Michael Key, if for no other reason than to see him accept his trophy as President Obama’s Anger Translator.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama
Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey)
Lena Headey (Game of Thrones)
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Christine Baranski. With apologies to our favouurte CBS series, our least favourite season of THE GOOD WIFE does not an award winner make.
Will Win: Lena Headey layers what in other hands could have been a cartoonish character into a deliciously sympathic villain.
Shoudl Win: If Lena Headey doesn’t walk away a winner, it will be Emmy Voters who will be forced to do a walk of shame.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama
Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul)
Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline)
Jim Carter (Downton Abbey)
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)
Michael Kelly (House of Cards)
Alan Cumming (The Good Wife)

Who We’ll Be Okay With Winning: Anyone but Alan Cumming. See above.
Will Win: Between BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL, Jonathan Banks has crafted one of the most interesting supporoting characters in recent small screen memory.
Should Win: BLOODLINE wouldn’t have been nearly as addictive without the incredibly compelling performance of relative newcomer Ben Mendelsohn.

The 2015 Emmys air on Sunday September 20 at 8PM on FOX (CTV in Canada)

X COMPANY Interview: I Spy a Return to Television for Dustin Milligan

February 17, 2015 By Alfonso Espina Leave a Comment

dustin milligan camp x

90210 fans can look forward to seeing the return of Dustin Milligan this winter in the role of Tom Cummings on CBC’s new spy series X COMPANY.

Milligan, who also stars as Ted Mullens on CBC’s other freshman series SCHITT’S CREEK, has not had a regular role on the small screen since his departure from the Beverly Hills-set drama back in 2009. But if fans are expecting more teen angst and love triangles, then they’re not going to get that from this series by FLASHPOINT co-creators Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern.

Instead, they’ll be immersed into a fascinating story that will make them curious to know more about how their country’s past. Filmed on location last year in Budapest, Hungary, X COMPANY takes viewers back in time to 1942 in the midst of one of the most harrowing six years in history, World War II.

Behind all of the covert operations is the headquarters known as Camp X, a top-secret training camp for spies that you may be surprised to know actually existed, was located on the shores of Lake Ontario between Whitby and Oshawa, and played a major role in providing the foundations of what we now call the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Related: CraveTV vs Netflix Canada vs shomi: Which Canadian Streaming Service is Right For You?

Although our heroes on the series — which include Aurora Luft (Evelyne Brochu), Alfred Graves (Jack Laskey), Harry James (Connor Price), and Neil Mackay (Warren Brown)— are fictional, the men and women they play are inspired by the real-life stories of the countless British, American and Canadian men and women who served as spies for the Allies during World War II.

As for Milligan, his character, Cummings, is a Madison Avenue wunderkind who is loosely based on David Mackenzie Ogilvy, the “father of advertising,” who worked with the British Intelligence Service. I interviewed the Canadian actor last month to talk about the new series, which premieres on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 9 p.m. on CBC, as well as how his Draper-esque character’s persuasive abilities benefit the team. Check it out below!

Congrats on the show. I found it really interesting.
Dustin: Nice. You saw the pilot?

Yeah, I watched it twice, actually. The first time I had no idea that Camp X existed, so I thought it was just a fictional take on espionage. Was that a factor for you wanting to join the show? Did you know about that as well?
Dustin: I just learned Camp X. I just started hearing about it cause I think a documentary had come out.

The History channel…
Dustin: Yeah, the History channel. And then a couple weeks [later], the script came across my desk — I don’t have a desk. My laptop. I took a look at it and was like, “Oh, yeah. This is pretty interesting.” What I loved about it is that, yeah, it was this dramatized version of this real place and these real people. I think it’s so cool that the show, as far as a TV show in general to tackle that, but not be so strictly adhering to the history part of it and allowing it to be creative. You know what I mean? Just allowing it to be its own story as well, but still basing everything, rooting everything in this real place and these real — I mean, that is always a great opportunity, a great honour to try to do that. So I was excited about that.

What I also like about the show is that they’re basically ordinary people but placed in extraordinary situations. Do you think the fact that they’re more relatable than someone who has skills for fighting is going to help?
Dustin: That was something we were dealing with all the time cause your instinct, especially I think as a male actor, your instinct is to try to be Mr. Cool…I shoot guns, I run and look like an action hero. But what I found really interesting about it — and this is what I kind of loved about my character Tom [Cummings] is that’s not his trade. He manipulates, he convinces people to do what he wants, and he slowly changes minds through dialogue, through subtlety versus just bang, bang, you’re dead kind of thing. That was something I really identified with. The idea, too, that you could go to war and that you’d be trying not to kill people. Not only are you trying to save lives, but you’re trying to not have anyone die in your effort to save lives. If I were to be put into a war scenario now, that would be what I would try to do as much as possible.

Was it a challenge to play in such a heightened situation that’s not from your normal life, or is it fun to play pretend you’re in a war? (laughs)
Dustin: But that’s what’s interesting… It’s not from my normal life, but this was a real thing, so that’s kind of the trick. So how does one react as yourself or as this character, which is ultimately an extension of yourself. How do you react in something that’s not only an extraordinary situation but it’s also real? I think that’s a challenge, and I think an honour to portray not necessarily real, historical figures but to be able to portray these struggles that people all across Europe, all across the world, at that time were struggling with.

Another interesting aspect to the show is that none of the characters are black versus white. They’re always facing moral dilemmas. Was that also part of the appeal for you to the show?
Dustin: Yeah, I know. And I think that’s what’s great about Mark [Ellis] and Steph [Morgensern], the creators of the show, that they’ve done is that a lot of the missions are based on reality. There is the historical part of it, but again they’re weaving in character traits that are fiction and weaving in these arcs and struggles that, like you said, aren’t black and white. I think that’s what’s great is that, you know, especially World War II and just wars in the past as time goes on, things get idealized. And there’s so much imagery of this strong, American or Canadian soldier. Just this iconic idea and ideal of what those wars were. But the reality is very different, and it’s ugly, and it’s not this shiny, nice picture. I think that’s what the creators have done very well, is make sure that it’s not a comic book version of what the war was like. They’re actually trying to express, through these five brand new spies, express what the effects of war can be while you’re there in the moment.

Since Camp X was so secretive, you didn’t really have that much material or actual cases to look at. Did you find other resources?
DUSTIN. Yeah, there is actually quite a bit of literature out there [that] I didn’t really read… (laughs)

They told me that the guy who did JAMES BOND was inspired by it…
Dustin: Ian Fleming.

Yeah.
Dustin: You know, Ian Fleming was trained an Camp X. David [Mackenzie] Ogilvy, who my character is loosely based on, was an advertising guy who was also apparently trained and working for the Allies as a spy. Yeah, I think that’s what’s interesting about this show is that there’s so much you don’t realize was going on. Because of the nature of espionage, of course you won’t know what’s going on, which I think is relatable to war now, where we’re learning things five, ten years later of what’s gone on recently in the Middle East. Torture…And all that stuff. You never quite know at the time how bad things really are.

As you mentioned, your character is described as having specialities in propaganda and deception. But we never really got to see that in the first episode. Would you be able to say how he does that exactly?
Dustin: Actually, in the second episode, there’s a great example of him…He’s put into a situation, as a lot of the characters are, it’s kind of a kill or be killed situation…Tom is able to find an alternate option in a) Kill somebody b) be killed by somebody. He finds a c). He’s employing these skills he has. Then it pops up again throughout the series. But it’s not until episode two that you really get to see him do his thing.

What do you hope audiences will take from it [the show]? Personally, I find it to be kind of like a tribute to these unsung heroes that don’t really have names since nobody knows them. But they’re kind of doing it vicariously.
Dustin: What’s great is that it’s telling the story of war from a different kind of perspective. There is action, and there is explosions, and guns, and all that kind of stuff, which is inherent in war. But what we’re really doing is pulling the curtain back on, like you said, people who don’t really have names that are famous and written down in books for being spies. Just because of the nature of it, you can’t know these things. It is a nice tribute in a lot of ways, and I think, too, a tribute to Canada’s role in ultimately helping to develop modern espionage and modern spy craft.

Thank you so much. I look forward to the next episode.
Dustin: Thank you, man.

What The CHUCK: Scott Krinsky, Mekenna Melvin, Ryan McPartlin, Joshua Gomez, and Vik Sahay Reflect on 91 Episodes of Awesome!

January 28, 2015 By Victoria Nelli

Series finales are extremely tricky. They can either leave you with no closure and ruin character development that was built throughout the show.  But on the other hand, it could show you the characters that you grew to love get the happy ending they’ve always dreamed of.  Personally, I hate both of those types of endings.  The finales I adore most are the ones that leave us with something to think about.  They make you ask “what if” and give the audience the option of deciding the fate of their beloved characters’ lives.

The series checked out after ninety-one episodes, leaving its mark on television and igniting a spark in fans everywhere.  “Chucksters” were outraged that they would no longer get to cozy up with their favorite intersect every week.  Much like Agent Bartowski, CHUCK had more to it than meets the eye.  CHUCK wasn’t just a comedy or an action packed primetime series; it was so much more than that.

It was clear from the beginning CHUCK wasn’t just about a computer nerd who accidentally downloaded a classified government computer in his head.   The show’s main plot was the love story of Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah. (Yvonne Strahovski) Mission after mission they would try and put off their obvious attraction towards each other until there finally was no more back and forth or on and off.  Every fans dream had come to life, Sarah and Chuck were finally going to get their perfect ending, or so they thought.

It sounds like a broken record, when critics say, “this show was ahead of it’s time.” when trying to justify why it didn’t last as long as it should have.  With CHUCK the longevity of it was not the problem, CHUCK had a great run, and an episode count that network execs today would kill for.  The problem was not many people knew about this wonderful little show.  CHUCK developed a cult following almost immediately after it started airing and still has a tight grip on its fans three years after it left the air.  There’s a reason people still talk about this show and are ferociously devoted to it.  This show never strayed from its true form; it was always a comedy but it also had such intense dramatic elements.  More than anything this little show that could, had heart; This show could have easily taken the cheesy route like most shows often do, but it didn’t.  It was new, exciting and addictive.  It gave the audience what they wanted and then ripped it out from them, but somehow found a way to give it back to them in an even better way.  CHUCK had the ability of making the audience happy while not giving them full control of the story, a quality that’s very hard to find nowadays on TV.  This show was one of a kind and was a true gift to television, in honor of the 3rd anniversary of the shows beautiful and brilliant finale I caught up with some of the shows most beloved cast members.  I chatted with Actors, Scott Krinsky, Mekenna Melvin, Ryan McPartlin, Joshua Gomez, and Vik Sahay about their favorite CHUCK moments, a possible movie, and why the finale worked so well.

What was your initial reaction when you signed on?
Vik Sahay: Well, when I first signed on, Lester was a speck of dust in the pilot. I had just lost the part of Morgan to Josh Gomez.  So I honestly thought okay, nothing ventured nothing gained kind of thing.  Then I found myself on set with McG directing and there was a palpable crackle that day, and I salivated right there. I improvised a button for the scene I was in, he and Josh (Schwartz) and Chris (Fedak) totally got it and we were off.  I left Canada and followed the trail into the Buy More.  And no, I had never been a part of something like that.  I mean there was a special pulp quality to the characters in their dead end jobs that I did find hilarious and lovable.  The creators gambled right in such a deep way. People swooned. It was a beautiful thing, so innocent and open hearted, the opposite of cynical.

Joshua Gomez: As soon as I read the pilot, I knew it was awesome and I was in! It’s hard to know though, what will resonate with people and become a hit.

Mekenna Melvin: I had seen a few episodes of the show, and then when I signed on I had a weekend where I marathoned all of the episodes and I fell in love with the whole storyline.  It was kind of a gift for me because I became such a huge fan.

Scott Krinsky: No, just because I didn’t know too much about the direction of the show as far as my character wasn’t originally a series regular.  Everything that happened to me and Vik (Sahay) with Jeffster, and a few others weren’t regulars to begin with, so we had no idea what was to come.

Ryan McPartlin: My first reaction was to call my agent to get me another job because I thought there was no way that NBC would take a risk on a show that was so outside of what I thought was typical broadcast programming. I give everyone who was at NBC and Warner Brothers television a lot of credit for keeping CHUCK on the air for five seasons.

What was your favorite Chuck episode?
Vik Sahay: I have to say the birth of Jeffster in “Chuck VS The Best Friend,” because of all that it wrought. It brought the band out of the garage and into the world.  How many people have these secret creative lives that never see the light of day? The whole thing was like a fantasy of what could happen if those parts of us were unleashed.

Joshua Gomez: This is always an interesting question because I probably view episodes with a different criteria than a fan may. For me, I recall certain memories or episodes that were particularly fun to make. “Chuck VS The Beard” was really exciting.  Zac  (Levi) was directing, and I was thrilled for Morgan to finally find out Chuck’s secret.  So many stand out to me.  Shooting the Pilot was magical, “Chuck VS The Honeymooners” and “Chuck VS The First Fight,” are a few more that come to mind.

Mekenna Melvin: I had a lot of fun doing “Chuck VS The Curse” with the pants box.  That was a really fun episode for me because I felt like it was one of the first episodes where I really got in on the spy stuff.  It was one of the first scenes where I got to hold a big gun. (laughs)

Scott Krinsky: When we got into Jeff’s background and his history those ones were always my favorite and the first time Jeffster performed, where we did “Africa.”  That one always kind of stays in my mind, and the Pilot, I still remember the first day showing up and shooting scenes with Vik, Zac, and McG our director.  I still vividly remember it and have great memories of that day.

Ryan McPartlin: The one that stands out is “Chuck VS Operation Awesome.” We all loved getting in on the spy action but what I miss most is the laughter and the tears in the Woodcomb/ Bartowski household. It was a pretty special place whether the cameras were rolling or not.

What was your favorite Jeffster moment?
Vik Sahay: Pretty impossible to narrow it down to one, but just thinking in the moment, today I’ll say the experience of shooting the Blaze of Glory video, it really took us into some pretty surreal territory. Whenever I see it, it shocks me with its absurdity and its glory.

How was doing the first Jeffster performance?
Vik Sahay: When I sang ‘Africa’, I was nervous, finding my way, much in parallel to Lester, but nothing compared to ‘Fat-Bottomed Girls’ ~ Our first appearance at Comic-Con was mythic.  I was terrified and sick with terror. The crowd swelled, the cast rallied behind us, I barely remember it, but it was beyond reality in a good way.

Scott Krinsky: It was great it was a rush!  It was nerve wracking though because we didn’t know how it would be received.

What storyline surprised you the most during your time on CHUCK?
Vik Sahay: Well, I would have to go behind the “limelight” of the band and recall the moment when Lester realized he was going to lose Jeff as he grew brilliant with health and resorted to trying to keep poisoning him with exhaust to keep him close. That’s when you know you love someone, when you secretly expose them to noxious fumes.

Joshua Gomez: More importantly, what surprising storyline didn’t make it into CHUCK? Morgan and Ellie – helllloooo?

Mekenna Melvin: I think that was the coolest thing about the show.  It’s such a testament to the writing that every time I got a script I was so shocked by it.  Just when you thought the characters could go one way they surprised you every time!

Scott Krinsky: There are so many great storylines.  I loved when we started getting in on the surveillance and learning about Chuck.  The bachelor party episode was great. The Christmas episode where we were all stuck at the Buy More was great!

Ryan McPartlin: I was delightfully surprised when Morgan became the Intersect. I could’ve watched him act like that douchey jerk for an entire season. It was hilarious!

In the final episodes we saw Chuck make some tough decisions regarding Sarah.  Do you think the ending would have worked the way it did if Chuck had used the last intersect upload on Sarah?  What was your initial reaction when you read the finale?
Vik Sahay: I loved it.  I loved that they meet again and there is a mystery, a vague sense of something that has happened before. In life, when we meet a soul mate for the “first” time, it feels like that anyway, that we have shared a whole lifetime with them before, and it’s like THERE you are! I’ve been looking all over space and time for you! They have to trust that mystery.

Joshua Gomez: I was a little surprised by the ending when I read the finale, but I’m not opposed to stories that end a bit ambiguously and leave things to the imagination. Maybe the kiss on the beach triggered an intersect-like flash of all her memories with Chuck. If not, at worst, she gets to experience the joy of falling in love all over again. To have a second “first kiss” is something we’ve all wished for at some point, no?

Mekenna Melvin: I thought it ended beautifully!  I remember closing it and having a really emotional moment because A. the show was ending and B. because everybody’s character really got a beautiful bow at the end.  That was the whole thing, that Chuck is going to love Sarah forever and he is going to sacrifice everything for her.  I thought the finale was perfect I loved it.

Scott Krinsky: I love the way the show ended.  I think mainly the finale was well received; I really loved how the show concluded.  I’m happy that we knew when the show was going to end and were able to give the fans a proper ending.

Ryan McPartlin: Personally, I loved it the way the show ended.  Watching Chuck and Sarah fall in love all over again was very poetic and possibly left a door cracked for future storytelling.

What do you think your character is doing now?
Joshua Gomez: Team Bartowski is still together and taking down bad guys but maybe with a few more additions? Spy Kids: Burbank edition!

Mekenna Melvin:  I think her and Morgan would be in a house somewhere with babies.  Morgan would be fighting crime; I’d like to think that Alex got in on the action. (Laughs)

The fans really helped launch this show do you think their power can give us a CHUCK movie? If there ever is a CHUCK movie what would you like to see happen in it?
Vik Sahay: I would believe anything of CHUCK fans. I would want Lester to end being the villain of whatever the new world order of CHUCK would be.  It would have to be a script that really took the mythology of the series and the characters to a whole other level.

Joshua Gomez: Our fans are amazing. If there’s any one factor that could tip the scales, it would be our fans! They are the reason we got to make 5 seasons.

Mekenna Melvin: Everyone always talks about it, I have no idea but what I do know is if there ever was a CHUCK movie I would be so excited and so on board.  I’d like to see a lot of big action scenes; it’d be really exciting to see where all of the characters have been.  I feel like there are so many different ways it could go!

Scott Krinsky: Yeah, I think anything’s possible, there’s talk about that but I kind of just read and hear what everyone else hears.  Ultimately it’s up to the studio and Warner Brothers. I’d be all for it though, I think it would be great a lot of fun to get everyone together.  Something would obviously have to bring us all together, some big spy story that’s going to somehow lead us all to each other.  What would the condition of Jeffster be being they’re touring (Laughs) what would we look like?   It would be fun to kind of revisit the characters a little down the road and see what they look like and how they’ve held up

Ryan McPartlin: It’s pretty difficult to go viral these days because there is a lot of content out there but our fans pretty much invented the renewal campaign with their Subway strategy so I don’t see why not. However, it’ll probably have to be a new approach that nobody has done before to grab the media’s attention. My bet is that one of our CHUCK fans can figure it out. I’d love for Morgan, Ellie and Devon to have opened a Chicago brewery called “Awesome City Brew” and of course, Devon has really packed on the pounds. This is why we leave the writing to Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak.

Is there anything specific you remember your character saying?  Favorite line from your character?
Vik Sahay: I do recall Lester saying, “My biological clock is tick-tocking…” It was a line that I had improvised, but they kept it in. I like to think that it still is, that he’s out there, scheming and dreaming.

Joshua Gomez: Does singing count? Singing “The Imperial March” with Zac (Levi) and then getting to walk into the actual John Williams score was a dream come true.

Mekenna Melvin: My favorite line would definitely be my first line ever, “Mom” that was how I go the job.  I had one line in the audition room, it was supposed to be one costar and then it turned into twenty-four episodes.

Scott Krinsky: I had a line “My mom used to say knowledge is powder” which I thought was really funny.

Ryan McPartlin: Besides a heartfelt “Awesome” with a teary eye when Clara was born, I loved that our writer, Ali Adler let me pay homage to Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward in “Chuck vs. The Broken Heart” by saying to Ellie, “Why would I go out for hamburger, when I have steak at home?”

You can should watch all five seasons of CHUCK on Netflix.
