Casinos in the Film Era of the 90s and 2000s

September 6, 2023 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Casinos play an important role in popular culture as they have been around for generations. They impact various sectors of the world of entertainment. The film industry happens to be one of them and it has several decades of a shared relationship with casinos and the entire industry.

The casino industry is mostly dominated by the iGaming sector nowadays. In other words, players across the world enjoy their favorite casino games online. There are several online casino websites that cater to their needs by providing them with tons of games as well as other interesting offers and mechanics. Additionally, they provide a secure gaming environment and cover several payment methods.

The physical aspect of the casino industry has been in bed with cinema for a while, and there are several films out there that cover various facets of the casino world.

Glitz and Glamour

Casinos are often used as settings and locations for a film. They can be part of the main story or side stories that choose to illustrate a character. Regardless of how they’re used in the film, they’re almost always presented as luxurious establishments with amazing design, top-tier staff, and an exciting atmosphere. You can take the casino in Casino Royale as an example.

Once Bond arrives there you can see that the venue is no ordinary establishment and it caters to all sorts of players. The agent has access to a high-roller poker game that lasts for days, and the staff works round the clock to keep players satisfied. The same sort of luxury can be seen in the Ocean’s Trilogy.

The glitz and glamour of casinos entice audiences and make them part of a luxurious world. When they see staff in impeccable uniforms as well as guests in all sorts of formal clothes. It serves as a lovely top that hides the intrigue or the façade of society.

The Intrigue

When you see a well-dressed person in a casino you assume they take care of themselves and take time to look good. Psychologically, you’re more likely to attribute positive traits to a well-dressed person. This is why suits and dresses and high heels and shoes are used in films with casinos as a nice surface to hide the intrigue of a character. You can see this in Ocean’s Eleven where all the characters in the film are impeccably dressed. Their attire is part of the scam they’re looking to pull and they look good regardless if they’re staff members or players.

The same can be said about Michael Corleone in the first Godfather film. He goes to negotiate with Moe Greene in a spectacular dark suit that makes him look sophisticated. He calls the meeting an attempt at negotiations, but it’s really a meeting where he tells him that he’s going to take over his casinos. So, he pretends to be a well-dressed and polite gentleman, but he’s really a well-mannered and calculating individual who gets his way. When he doesn’t he takes all sorts of action to make his plans come true.

A Microcosm of Society

Casinos also represent a part of society or a microcosm of society, a world that doesn’t always play by the rules when it comes to making it big. The Godfather duology is another example of this. In other words, it’s used to present the ties Las Vegas had with the Italian mob. If you go back in history, you’ll find that some big brand names in Sin City wouldn’t have been possible without mob intervention. The first Godfather film shows that heads of families can cater to various casinos and run them behind the scenes. They also have the money and influence to invest in other casinos as illustrated in the second Godfather title.

Another example of this microcosm is the Casino film from 1995. The mob takes an interest in its investments and makes sure that they’re operating smoothly. That’s why they send their men to take care of their investments. The man in question is Ace Rothstein and he does a swell job of it until Nicky comes along. The mob decides that one man isn’t worth it and eliminates him to enjoy smooth operations and profits. Nicky doesn’t make the cut, and the casino continues to operate.

Sometimes, people will go visit illegal casinos to play games and these elements also contribute to the microcosm in society. Roudners is a perfect example of that as the main character plays his most important games in an illegal casino. It’s a risky prospect as these are dens where criminals roam and might hurt him and anyone else there. Unfortunately, illegal casinos are still part of society.

Heists

Casinos have been subject to heists for years. Some of them were pretty clever and inspired some films. The Italian Job is one of them and so is Ocean’s Eleven. We mentioned previously that the characters in the film are impeccably dressed to make sure the scam or the heist works. All of them are expert thieves and they stake out each part of the casino to find an angle they can exploit. The film also illustrates the complexity of robbing a casino as these venues employ a variety of security tools such as cameras, face recognition software, and more to keep potential thieves out. You can this one and other casino films on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, or Prime, that bring all sorts of new stuff each month.

Final Words

Casinos have remained important to popular culture which is why they have a spot in the film industry. They serve as glamorous locations where a film is set, but they also serve as places where not all well-dressed people are well-mannered and well-meaning individuals. Films aren’t afraid to show casinos as parts of a microcosm of society and their ties to the underground. They can be dark places as well. Nevertheless, casinos come in multiple colors when they’re represented in the world of films and will continue to represent the multiple facets of society.

The Witcher Needs to Replicate the Game of Thrones Model or it Could Risk Fading Away

July 11, 2023 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

After the success of Game of Thrones on HBO, there was a mad scramble to create the next massive fantasy offering. Viewers were hungry for similar content, and Netflix quickly moved to purchase the rights to adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books. This seemed like a wise move, with the characters already well-known among gamers. However, it now appears that the offering from Lauren Schmidt Hissrich could be about to shed viewers.

If The Witcher is to stand any chance of being as successful as Game of Thrones, it needs to replicate the HBO offering’s franchise model and expand into various other mediums to keep people interested.

How Can The Witcher Mirror the Game of Thrones Franchise?
When The Witcher first came out on Netflix in 2019, it had an early advantage over the debut season of GOT. It benefited from the fact that viewers were searching for more fantasy content. Many people already knew about Geralt of Rivia & co thanks to the hugely popular console games from CD Projekt Red. There was a lot of hype around the first season, but this gradually dissipated with the release of the second and third offerings in the series. It’s clear that The Witcher won’t be able to leverage the game’s popularity forever, and it needs new related content to appeal to a broader audience.

As GOT grew increasingly famous, the franchise expanded into other media, which helped it grow exponentially. For example, the Telltale Games Game of Thrones roleplaying game allowed viewers to experience Westeros in a new way. In addition, there was also a foray into the online casino industry with the massively successful Game of Thrones slot game. As it stands, this title remains available at 888casino, which is ranked highly as one of the best real money online casinos in Canada. Unsurprisingly, 888casino achieves its edge by including officially franchised slot games courtesy of sprawling universes like that of GOT.

Ideally, The Witcher must delve into the same industry to grow its audience and keep them interested in new seasons.

Why Might The Witcher Shed Viewers?
The showrunners of The Witcher have always said that they would stay true to the original books rather than the games. The novels from Sapkowski have boomed in popularity since the Netflix series first aired. Still, it has recently become clear that the writers of the adaptation are taking more artistic license than they had initially said they would. The recent season includes characters and storylines that didn’t exist in the original work.

The Witcher may shed viewers if it goes off in its own direction, as this could lead the quality and focus of the series to decline. Some have speculated that Henry Cavill decided to quit because he was a book purist and didn’t like how things were going. There’s no doubt that the loss of Cavill in the starring role will hurt the ratings as well.

The Witcher still has at least four more seasons ahead of it, but it won’t be able to build a legacy unless the franchise expands alongside it. To appeal to a broader viewer base, Netflix must commission games and other related works.

How is Vikings: Valhalla Continuing the Legacy of Vikings?

May 8, 2023 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

The History Channel’s Vikings was a hugely important offering, as it led to a slew of new historical epics on television. At its peak, the series about the legendary Norse raiders was even compared to HBO’s Game of Thrones. The latter is considered one of the best shows ever made, so Michael Hirst will have felt honoured that his offering was in the same discussion. Thanks to the overwhelming success of Vikings, Netflix recently released Vikings: Valhalla to continue its legacy.

Caption: A Trailer for Vikings: Valhalla.

Original Series Had an Enormous Influence on the Entertainment Sector

Vikings began on Canada’s History Channel but soon grew so popular that online streaming services including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video bought the rights to be able to show it. After season three of the series was released, it was clear that Vikings was growing as a franchise. It spread out into related games, with the Vikings slot now one of the top online casino games on the market. It features Lagertha and Floki on the thumbnail, two much-loved and instantly recognisable characters.

The slot game was a welcome title for people who already enjoyed the show and wanted to experience it in other ways. It also helped to introduce the series to online casino players who may not have heard about it until they’d seen the slot game.

There were numerous other games on different platforms that served the same purpose but weren’t directly associated with the series. However, it’s clear that the developers were clearly inspired by Vikings when they made them. One such game was Vikings: Wolves of Midgard, which featured similar characters to the series.

Along with now having an ever-expanding franchise, Vikings also had a huge influence on other offerings in the entertainment industry and helped to bring back Norse mythology with a bang. For example, God of War and God of War Ragnarök took the God of War franchise in a new direction and focused on the gods that Vikings worshipped.

Prior to the 2018 title, the games had always used the stories of ancient Greece for inspiration. The recent God of War games were the two most successful offerings in the entire series and have been dubbed by many as two of the greatest games ever made.

Vikings have also clearly had a massive impact on television. In the years since the release of Hirst’s epic, there have been numerous other hugely popular history-themed shows. One of the best of these was The Last Kingdom, which was based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories. It ran for five seasons on Netflix and was followed up by a feature-length film, Seven Kings Must Die in 2023. Some other recent history-themed series that grew up in Vikings’ wake include Knightfall, Barbarians, and Marco Polo.

How Did Vikings: Valhalla Offer Something New?

After the immense success of Vikings, it wasn’t surprising that Netflix picked up the rights to create a spinoff. The streaming service released the first season of Vikings: Valhalla in 2022, and it swiftly moved to renew it for a second and third season.

Showrunner Jeb Stuart stuck with the tried and tested formula that made the predecessor so well-loved, but also attempted to offer something new. The writing team also opted to cover a much later period in Viking history, which opens up the possibility of exploring a whole host of new locations that didn’t feature in Vikings.

Indeed, Valhalla is set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, and it aims to chronicle the later days of the legendary seafarers. According to reports, the series will lead up to the end of the Viking Age which culminated with the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. This means that it could be set for at least five seasons if it remains popular and the ratings stay high.

Because Valhalla is set in a completely different era to Vikings, it has a fresh new cast with plenty of potential future stars. Just like the original series turned the likes of Travis Fimmel and Alexander Ludwig into household names, Valhalla could do the same for its cast. Some of the standout names in the Netflix offering include Sam Corlett as Leif Erikson and Frida Gustavsson as Freydís Eiríksdóttir.

Valhalla has been lauded by critics so far thanks to sticking to the formula that worked so well for Vikings. Numerous publications praised it for its straightforward adventure storytelling and stunning battle set pieces.

The first season has a 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second holds an impressive 100 percent. If it follows the trajectory of its predecessor, it could get better as it goes along.

Where are the Best Places to Watch Vikings: Valhalla in Canada?

Vikings was a cultural sensation that had a huge impact on the wider entertainment industry, but Valhalla has the potential to be even bigger. When Vikings was first released, it was only available on the History Channel. It gained mass attention after season three when it was made available on various streaming services including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Valhalla already has a head start on Vikings in this regard, as it was released to the world on Netflix from the start. There are numerous ways for people to enjoy it in Canada. With a full subscription, it’s possible to stream all the episodes uninterrupted.

There’s now also the option of Netflix Basic, which has been described as a great plan for frugal individuals. It’s possible to watch all the popular Netflix shows, but there are advert breaks within them. These aren’t the only options, though.

Viewers can also buy the series as a download on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, or the Microsoft Store. With all these avenues available, Valhalla has the potential to reach a vast audience.

Vikings: Valhalla has continued the legacy of Vikings by offering a lot more of the same. However, there’s enough that’s different about it to keep viewers on their toes and attract some new ones. It could lead to its own franchise that also spans out into related games.

Live Streaming and Betting Platforms Are Joining Forces

April 21, 2023 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

It’s been around for decades, but streaming has swiftly become the go-to way to enjoy entertainment content. Obviously, the big hitter of the streaming world is Netflix, which has several new shows and movies coming to Canada and all other regions this month. Outside of the Chris Rock special, however, Netflix and its fellow streaming platforms have been notably absent from the incredibly popular area of live streaming.

Particularly since 2020, live streaming and live video have taken off in the mainstream. Their ability to connect people in real-time offers a level of immersion unmatched across entertainment and creates a sense of “fear of missing out” in the audience. While the industry was already leveraging live streaming at least a decade before 2020, online betting firms are now able to double down on the tech because of its widespread adoption.

Integrating live streaming into real-time betting platforms

Technically, live streaming has been around since Xerox Park hosted a live gig in California from a group of employees who had formed a band in 1993. In the more modern sense, live streaming can be traced back to 1995 and 1997 through RealNetworks and their commercialization of live video streaming. It didn’t take off as a popular technology then, with YouTube’s 2008 event YouTube Live seen as the first mainstream application.

That said, even before 2008, fans around the world would tap into live streams to watch sports. It’s been a common practice for close to two decades, spurred on by location-locked broadcasting. As such, betting sites across the US decided to step up and bridge the gap between those who want to watch the more niche or unavailable sports and the live events themselves.

Now, in most states of the US, you can find a betting platform that will live stream many of the games, matches, and events that it presents odds for betting on. There’s a wide array of platforms offering Iowa sports betting bonus codes so newcomers can claim a second chance bet and watch live sports to get started. It’s a feature that proves to enhance the experience.

Live stream platforms embracing the betting possibilities

Easily the biggest name in live streaming right now is Twitch. Not only does it command an audience of millions, but popular live streamers can go on to become modern celebrities. In late 2020, the platform introduced its own take on betting. As many live streamers pose themselves challenges or are battling in games, the Channel Points Predictions feature allows Twitch viewers to wager their points on the potential outcomes to win a split of the pool. Of course, in the more traditional sense, there’ve also been live streamers rise to prominence by streaming their betting and casino gaming sessions.

Live streaming and betting are now going hand-in-hand to bring a much more immersive, varied, and even interactive experience to the gambling activity and the viewing of real-time events.

These Classic Melodies Are Always Being Reinvented

August 25, 2022 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

There’s no denying that some tunes appear to be virtually immortal. The power of a captivating melody can transcend all limitations of time and location. One need only look to any number of popular Christmas carols to see this in action – the lyrics of Good King Wenceslas, for example, are from 1853, whereas the familiar melody goes back to the 13th century hymn to spring known as ‘Tempus Adest Floridum’.

But it’s not just festive tunes that have staying power; many of the songs we take for granted in our popular media have long-lived origins that are often surprising. Below we’re going to take a look at two examples of this, songs that just keep reappearing, and often in the most unlikely of places.

The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo

This music hall classic was penned by theatrical agent and songwriter Fred Gilbert in 1891. Its somewhat surprising title refers to the sensational winnings of one Charles Deville Wells who employed a strategy developed by British casino magnate John Henry Martingale to great success at the roulette wheel. The method, now known as the Martingale strategy, enabled Wells to sweep the tables of the most prestigious casino in the world, the Casino De Monte-Carlo, over the course of three days – ultimately walking away with the equivalent of $5 million in today’s money, up from $20 thousand.

Nowadays, a new generation of tech-savvy casino aficionados prefer to peruse any number of variants of this popular game in its online incarnations through leading digital platforms, and while few today know Wells’ story, a surprising number of them will be familiar with the tune. This is because this song has gone on to reappear, time and again, often where you’d least expect it. Originally the song was performed by music hall star Charles Coburn who bought the rights to the tune from Gilbert upon finding that, try as he might, he couldn’t get its catchy melody out of his head.

In the 1962 classic film Lawrence of Arabia, Peter O’Toole, in the character of Lawrence, can be found singing the tune while riding across the desert. In an episode of the cartoon American Dad!, lead character Stan sings an altered version of the song named “The Man Who Built the World in His Basement” while building a miniature town using a shrink ray, and in the 2017 space horror Alien: Covenant, antagonist android David sings the song while cutting his hair, in imitation of Lawrence of Arabia.

The Ballad of Mack the Knife

Originally titled ‘Die Moritat von Mackie Messer’, this immensely popular song started life as part of Bertolt Brecht’s operetta, The Threepenny Opera, in 1928. Following that show’s tour of the United States, the song became a hit. Then, in 1959, crooner Bobby Darin recorded the best known cover of the song, with this version going to number one on both the UK and US billboards.

This unlikely jump from German show tune to American big-band hit would be enough to justify its inclusion here, but Mack the Knife was far from done transforming. In fact you’d be hard pressed to find many songs that have been covered so widely. Among the stars that have put their own spin on this song you’ll find Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Nick Cave, Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, The Psychedelic Furs, and Louis Armstrong. But there’s one recent reinvention of the song that is by far the most striking.

In 1986, McDonalds were struggling with new competition in the form of Burger King, and were rapidly losing market-share and popular appeal from within their core demographic. To counteract this, they devised what would go on to be one of the most successful marketing campaigns in modern history. They re-cast the song as an advert for McDonalds, with the hook “Mack the Knife” changed to “Mac Tonight” and the name of their iconic moon-shaped performer cut from the mold of Bobby Darin.

The surreal and wondrous imagery of Mac Tonight performing on a grand piano in the clouds above a city-scape composed of giant McDonald’s products was an instant hit and reintroduced the tune’s irresistible melody to a whole new generation.

Shortly after the initial allegations that they were card counters became true, Orr decided to withdraw his endorsement and told Barnes that he had a week to pay off his $100,000 debt. On the other hand, Barnes told his team of students they needed to raise $500,000. They broke up and travelled to Ottawa and Quebec, hoping the casinos still didn’t recognise their faces. They eventually got the money back but also ensured Orr would be present at her meeting with Barnes to ensure the debt was paid in full.

Five TV shows you have to watch if you like Harry Potter

April 19, 2022 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Using popular streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, people are able to access a variety of television shows and movies with ease. One movie that has registered huge success in recent times, despite not being available on many mainstream streaming platforms, is Harry Potter. The wizard-themed adventures, written by British author J. K. Rowling, have captivated global audiences and inspired many similar releases since.

These days, wizard-themed television shows are particularly popular and have a dedicated and loyal following of fans behind them. This type of target audience typically supplements its wizard watching with a variety of other wizard-themed adventures, too, be it in the Blue Wizard slot game or through reading about Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings. Ultimately, wizards have featured prominently in a variety of memorable products over the years. Of course, for many, Harry Potter is the ultimate option in this particular category, but Harry, Hermione and Ron aren’t the only options. With that in mind, below is a look at some popular TV shows fans of Harry Potter have to see.

Charmed
With sister witches and an array of dark beings to see off, Charmed contains a lot of features that fans of Harry Potter will surely like. Spanning over eight seasons and with a dedicated community of fans behind it, Charmed provides viewers with everything from memorable fight scenes to elements of the supernatural. Once you’ve dived into the show, you’ll certainly want to learn more about the adventures of the Halliwell sisters, especially as their powers become more and more evident.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
A classic television show that many grey-haired readers might have grown up with, Buffy The Vampire Slayer doesn’t offer the wizard-filled action of Harry Potter but it certainly does an excellent job of highlighting various aspects of mythology and features a variety of powerful characters. Following the story of Buffy, a vampire slayer, you’ll be exposed to all of her powers, strength and agility in this vampire-filled treat. Although Buffy The Vampire Slayer isn’t the same as Harry Potter in some respects, there are other details that make it hugely appealing to fans of J. K. Rowling’s fantasy novels.

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina
Following the story of Sabrina, a half-human half-witch character, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is an entertaining watch. Featuring magic and an extensive selection of epic scenes, this particular show serves up a dose of spookiness and all-round entertainment. Sabrina is essentially struggling to accept who she is and what her power entails, instead preferring to stay alongside her friends and her partner. Sadly, though, for Sabrina, the life she wants isn’t necessarily meant for her.

Although Smallville champions superheroes more than a wizard way of life, it still shares plenty of parallels with Harry Potter. For example, the show features the same type of friendships and massive moments that Harry Potter does. Likewise, the show is centred around a young protagonist named Clark Kent (Superman) who has to adapt to a new life and be in control of his powers. As Harry has to protect the secrets of the wizarding world, so too does Clark Kent as he attempts to fight off all things evil.

The Magicians
Featured in an educational setting, namely a university to be precise, The Magicians is another popular show well worth checking out. A school for magicians, Brakebill University provides education on the world of magic and brings up and coming talent together in what is a truly entertaining watch. From teenage shenanigans to magic-themed mayhem, The Magicians has it all.
