ORPHAN BLACK Redux: Chafing Under the All-Seeing Monitoring Eye

May 4, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

The new British sci-fi series ORPHAN BLACK does not hesitate to throw in a curve ball every chance it gets. After discovering last week in the episode “Conditions of Existence” that Beth’s boyfriend Paul (Dylan Bruce) was actually a plant assigned to monitor her every move, Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) decided to turn the tables on him to find out what Paul was really up to. After planting a bug in his office, Sarah’s worst suspicions were confirmed. Paul was spying for the enemy. Then Paul sensing something was really off with faux-Beth, followed Sarah and snapped a picture of her with her daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler), which led to a very tense showdown back at Beth’s apartment. Guns drawn, Sarah and Paul had their first honest conversation. Unfortunately, just as they were letting their facades slip, the episode ended with Sarah asking Paul, “Just tell me why” and his cryptic response, “They don’t tell us why.” [Read more…]

TV Today: Why We Love Anti-Heroes

May 3, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

If you are a TV aficionado, then you have probably been hearing the term “anti-hero” a lot in the past decade.  In fact, Showtime has made a fortune off of its “anti-hero” platform showcasing its series DEXTER, WEEDS, HOMELAND, NURSE JACKIE, CALIFORNICATION, as well as its upcoming new series RAY DONOVAN.  These are perfect examples of shows that feature the joys and triumphs of “anti-heroes.”

But recently the “anti-hero” craze seems to have reached such a saturation point that no one can exactly define what an “anti-hero” is and how it differs from just being a villain or a hero.  [Read more…]

The Syfy series WAREHOUSE 13 likes to play with death, so much so that cheating death has become a central theme of the show.  But in a surprise twist before the long hiatus, WAREHOUSE 13 changed the rules and finally delivered a death that was not reversible.  Killing off fan-favorite Leena (Genelle Williams), fans were as devastated as the characters left standing on the show.  In addition, discovering that Artie was responsible for her was even more shocking.  Artie was the one man who we could never conceive of doing such a thing and the result was haunting.  In a recent press conference call, executive producer Jack Kenny and stars Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly talked about the ripple-effects of Leena’s death, how she came to draw the short-stick, as well as previewing all the fun guest-stars upcoming over the next 10 episodes of Season 4.5. One of BONES most notorious and deadly villains returns for a heart-stopping finale.  Pelant is not normally a name to send shivers down your spine, but as long-time fans well-know, that name should.  Super-psychotic, super-intelligent and utterly without remorse, Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) is a sociopath you never want to ever encounter.  He has wrecked havoc in the lives of our beloved BONES heroes for over two years now and the latest person in his cross-hairs is Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).  In a recent press conference call, star Emily Deschanel gave all the scoop on how difficult this latest encounter with Pelant is going to be and the emotional toll it takes on Dr. Temperance Brennan. THE GOOD WIFE Redux: A Trap Is Sprung

April 28, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Perhaps there was no more heart-breaking moment on THE GOOD WIFE than in the 2nd season episode  “Foreign Affairs” when Alicia (Julianna Margulies) found out that her estranged husband Peter (Chris Noth) had slept with her new best friend Kalinda (Archie Panjabi).  We could just see the glass shattering around Alicia as her carefully constructed façade of control began to slip.  With expediency that one can only marvel at, Alicia had the locks changed on her apartment, packed Peter’s things, and rented an apartment for him — all within hours of learning of his latest betrayal.  Peter had betrayed her one last time and she was not going to take it anymore. DOCTOR WHO Speculation: Driving The Doctor Mad

April 27, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Four episodes into the travels with Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) and we have begun to notice a pattern with The Doctor (Matt Smith). He is frantically driven to try to protect Clara and yet simultaneously unravel the mystery “The Impossible Girl.” In the “Bells of Saint John,” The Doctor dashed to be at Clara’s side and then ferociously fought the Spoonheads to save her. In “The Rings of Akhaten,” The Doctor was challenged to show Clara something amazing costing her something precious in return. In “Cold War,” The Doctor negotiated with the deadly Skaldak to spare Clara and save Earth. And in “Hide,” The Doctor once again tries to find a way to subtly solve the mystery of Clara Oswald with the help of a psychic. [Read more…]

NIKITA Redux: Burning Down the House and Taking a Beloved Hero With It

April 26, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Last week’s episode of NIKITA was shocking on multiple levels. First, it dared to kill off a fan-favorite character. Second, it dared to burn down its own house.  NIKITA has always been a trigger-happy show and has dared to kill off high profile characters before (R.I.P. Percy), but killing one of its white-knight heroes was earth-shattering.  In addition, we all knew the days of Division being able to operate as a clandestine force for good would be short-lived with all those allegedly reformed agents chaffing under the imposed-constraints.  We just did not suspect that it would be this short.  Division literally imploded once the recruits figured out that their own government was coming to exterminated each and everyone of them, effectively reneging on the deal to give each a pardon in exchange for their service in tracking down the rogue Division agents. The Great Divide: An Examination of the Ever-Growing Disconnect Between Television Critics and Viewers

April 25, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

From the dawn of television, there has always been a vast divide separating the TV critics from the TV viewers.  Critics tend to love TV shows with deep themes, that are intellectually stimulating, and best of all, offer insider-jokes.   But such high-brow fare rarely connects with the mass viewing audience.  Viewers have a completely different set of criteria which they judge TV shows.  They are not looking for the best shows, the most thought-provoking shows, or even the shows which make the most Hollywood insider references – instead, average viewers value entertainment, self-contained episodes, appealing characters, and most of all:  it cannot be strictly cerebral – viewers just don’t want to think that hard. ARROW Scoop: J. August Richards Teases the Arrival of the Mysterious Mr. Blank

April 24, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

Some say villains are made and others say that they are born that way.  But there is a school of thought that some villains choose their destiny regardless of their birthright or upbringing.  This just may be the case with ARROW’s latest villain Mr. Blank.  Born unable to connect with others, he relates only to his surroundings.  Taking that unique ability, he found a decisively diabolical career for himself and put it to good use.  In an exclusive interview, J. August Richards talked about trying to get into the mind of a sociopath, as well as what continues to draw him time and time again to the allure of genre television. [Read more…]

ARROW Star John Barrowman Dishes on The Dark Archer, DOCTOR WHO, TORCHWOOD and SCANDAL!

April 24, 2013 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

Heroes and villains go hand in hand. They make for the ultimate co-dependent relationship; but it also makes for riveting storytelling.  Knowing better than most the power of playing a hero or a villain is actor John Barrowman, who has made a solid career out of portraying both.  Beloved for his infamous role as Captain Jack in both DOCTOR WHO and TORCHWOOD, John is a fan-favorite in the superhero/sci-fi realm.  Adding another feather to his cap (pun intended), John recently tackled the role of Malcolm Merlyn in the CW series ARROW.  When revealed last winter that Malcolm was The Dark Archer of DC comic-lore, fans welcomed him jubilantly.  No longer just the “well-dressed man” of ARROW or the heartless father of Tommy Merlyn, by donning the black attire and landing a few well-placed arrows The Dark Archer staked a claim in Starling City against the vigilante known as The Hood (aka the Green Arrow).

In a recent exclusive interview, John shared how he came to be a part of the DC verse of superheroes and villains, as well as candidly talking about the DOCTOR WHO 50th anniversary, the future of TORCHWOOD, and a few words about his cryptic role on SCANDAL. [Read more…]
