Could Sport Be Amazon’s Golden Ticket to Streaming Success?

March 24, 2021 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Many different streaming services are competing for our attention these days, but one of the most high-profile is undoubtedly Prime Video. Amazon offers a wide range of TV and movie content on the service, with recent eye-catching additions including the comedy sequel Coming 2 America. However, the platform may soon be home to some top American football action as well, if fresh reports are to be believed.

A new deal?
At the start of March, the Wall Street Journal exclusively revealed reports that Amazon is in talks with the NFL to offer a number of matches on Prime Video. The paper stated that the deal would see Thursday night games broadcast on the service, while it would focus on clashes that are not available on standard television outside of the regions of the sides involved.

News of such developments comes at a time when the sport has really been in the spotlight, with Superbowl LV recently being held. According to Deadline, CBS Sports figures suggested that the event had an audience of more than 96 million across a range of platforms, while it was also thought to be the most live-streamed Superbowl ever. The report outlined how it averaged around 5.7 million viewers per minute. The NFL is also thriving in other ways, with it notably becoming a key market in the sports betting world. Sites like William Hill now offer football odds on a range of related issues, including the draft, the division winners and the regular season MVP. It is also massive in video gaming, thanks to titles like EA’s Madden series.

Embracing the action
If the reports are indeed correct, it could be argued that Amazon may be using live sport to mark itself out from its competitors. For instance, while Netflix has high-profile documentaries like The Last Dance or the soccer series Sunderland ‘Til I Die, it does not tend to feature live sport.

In contrast, Amazon has really embraced the area in recent years and broadcasts top action from a range of different sports. For example, as the Premier League site explains, the brand has rights in the UK to broadcast a package of live soccer games from England’s top division. The partnership with the league first began in 2019/20 and includes 20 live matches a season. In addition, Amazon gives Prime members in the UK and Ireland the chance to watch a range of tennis action. The deal includes ATP and WTA Tours, as well as the US Open.

At the end of last year, there were also reports that the brand may be looking to gain rights to broadcast cricket in India. The Financial Times revealed how Amazon has the rights to stream New Zealand cricket in the country, while a spokesperson added that the company would consider other opportunities to get further rights related to the sport. Disney currently broadcasts the Indian Premier League and the country’s international cricket matches.

A major opportunity?
When all of that is considered, it really appears that Amazon has sensed a major opportunity when it comes to the domain of live sport. It will be interesting to see how matters develop in relation to the NFL, as well as whether the brand goes on to explore other areas in the coming months too. It will also be fascinating to see whether Amazon’s efforts lead to other streaming platforms considering similar moves.

Streaming has really taken off in recent years and is now a key part of how many of us watch all kinds of TV. With that in mind, it is perhaps not that outlandish to consider that it may soon become crucial to sport.

Will Mad Max: The Wasteland Bring About New Casino Games and Expand The Franchise?

March 15, 2021 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

The Mad Max franchise began in 1979 with Mel Gibson in his breakout role. The Braveheart actor went on to star in Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1981 and 1985 respectively, and the original trilogy was well-received. It took thirty years for George Miller to decide to reboot the franchise with Mad Max: Fury Road, which was a critical success. As a result of the 2015 film’s popularity, there appear to be numerous prequels and sequels in the pipeline. One of these is Mad Max: The Wasteland, which is expected to hit screens in 2023. This may be accompanied by a new casino game to add to the popular slot that already exists.
Mad Max: Fury Road Was a Critical Success

Caption: Mad Max: Fury Road trailer.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a brand-new reboot of the 1980s films, this time with Tom Hardy in the title role as Max Rockatansky. The picture takes viewers back to the grim post-apocalyptic desert landscape first shown in the original, this time with a new premise. In the Kennedy Miller Mitchell production, Max teams up with Charlize Theron’s Furiosa while fleeing the cult leader, Immortan Joe. Theron’s heroine was so popular that Miller has now decided to create a prequel story about the character’s origins.

Fury Road was the most successful offering in the Mad Max franchise in terms of revenue, raking in $375 million worldwide. Despite outperforming its three predecessors, however, it was considered to be a box office failure due to its high production costs. The film ended up losing somewhere between $30 and $40 million but, due to its strong critical reception, there is much potential for future films to outdo this performance. One of the reasons for the failure may have been due to the release of the Mad Max slot game coming later. Had the online casino market been tapped in advance, the film may have attracted a vast number of extra viewers.

Mad Max: Fury Road received a vast number of plaudits from critics. It has an incredibly impressive approval score of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and an average rating of 8.6/10. Expert critics were in general consensus about the film’s artistic direction and vision, and also praised the high-octane action sequences. Writing for Forbes magazine, Scott Mendelson said it was a glorious motion picture and awarded it 10 out of 10.

When writing Fury Road, Miller, Brendan McCarthy, and Nico Lathouris said that they had created way too much material for just one film. Indeed, they had ideas for at least two more, with a full backstory for Furiosa planned. The film about Theron’s character is set to be a prequel without the superstar in it, with Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit lead Anya Taylor-Joy set to take on the role. This means that the franchise will be able to head off in two directions simultaneously. One picture will focus on the early life of the female warrior from the 2015 film, while another will be a continuation of the Fury Road timeline.

Turning Into a Massive Franchise Thanks to Casino

One thing that will work in any future films’ favour is the fact that the Mad Max franchise has actually grown in stature significantly since the release of the 2015 film. It could, perhaps, be argued that the marketing of the reboot was slightly off, and the producers didn’t quite do enough to ensure a great amount of people heard of it through various channels. There is no danger of that happening this time around, as the Mad Max brand is now prevalent across other forms of media. This will serve to drum up awareness for future instalments of the film series.

The main way that Mad Max has permeated the entertainment industry has been through its related casino games. 888 online casino Canada, for instance, has two separate Mad Max offerings. These are a slot game and a scratch card. The unique Mad Max artwork helps these games stand out, and the variety on offer means that they can attract a higher number of players. This is apparently very effective, as the current jackpot for the slot game stands at over $1m. Meanwhile, others will decide to scratch in search of wins in the iconic, post-apocalyptic wasteland. Casino has proven to be an excellent way to boost films over the years, and it seems certain that there will be new slots to promote future movies.

There is also a Mad Max console game from Avalanche Studios. The game was popular and appealed to a large number of players. The problem was that it was released months after the film and didn’t act as a way to promote the silver screen offering. It had originally been planned for a 2014 release, which could have helped boost Fury Road’s performance at the box office.

Warner Bros. Pictures may learn from its mistakes when it comes to the release of Mad Max: The Wasteland. It would be wise to commission other games in these various genres months before The Wasteland is scheduled to hit screens. This will help capture the attention of people who may not follow the film industry as closely as others.

What Can Viewers Expect From The Wasteland?

The post-apocalyptic world created by Miller has endless possibilities, and the title character is one that viewers will keep coming back to see. Hardy is hugely popular and is always able to pull in big crowds. The Dark Knight Rises star already confirmed that he was contracted to three more films, suggesting that there is a lot of scope for future offerings.

According to reports, filming for The Wasteland has already been completed, and there is a tentative release date for some time in 2023. This is also the planned schedule for Furiosa, meaning that the two could drop around the same time. This would help the films to cross-promote and could be a massive boost to the success of both of them.

There are few details about the plot of The Wasteland at the moment, with Miller previously having said that it would be on a much smaller scale than its predecessor. The director also hinted that it may not involve Theron, despite the popularity of her character. Hardy’s statements, though, suggest he will be there. Let’s face it, it would be hard to release a Mad Max sequel without the title character in it.

Mad Max: The Wasteland has had little fanfare up to this point. But now that filming has wrapped, Warner Bros will soon step up its promotion drive. This could come in the form of more casino games, which will help to boost the franchise and build a bigger audience for future instalments. The casino industry is likely to play a major part in helping the new offering to become a box office sensation.

Canadian TV Shows Filmed in Real-life Locations

January 28, 2021 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Canada has been seen as a perfect filming location for many directors in recent years, with its natural backdrop transporting viewers to the country from wherever they may be in the world. Academy Award-winning films such as Good Will Hunting, Chicago, and The Revenant – but to name a few – were all shot partly or solely in Canada. It is not just the film industry that has used the country as a location to shoot their projects, however, with many popular TV shows also using the country as a base to film. Below, we list three of the most popular TV shows to have shot in real-life locations around Canada.

Fargo
Based on the hugely successful 1996 film of the same name, Fargo (Series 1) tells the story of insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) as he meets, and is subsequently influenced by, the notorious Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton). The critically acclaimed series began filming in 2013 in and around Calgary, Alberta. Calgary is famous for being the first city in Canada to host the Winter Olympics and is home to a number of tourist attractions, such as the Calgary Tower, Fort Calgary, and the Calgary Stampede.
One of the attractions of Alberta to TV and film directors is the stunning natural scenery that the area provides. Calgary has been the main shooting location for the first three seasons of Fargo, and the visual quality produced may go some way to explaining why arguably TV’s biggest ever show – Game of Thrones – chose to do some of their filming in Calgary. The success of Game of Thrones has spawned plenty of content related to the show, including a variety of Game of Thrones video games, including the popular online slot title. The slot itself utilises an infamous wintery backdrop, synonymous with Canada and the Alberta filming location. You can navigate to this website to see reviews of online casinos that support the Game of Thrones slot, along with many of the other top Canadian online casinos.

Orphan Black
Orphan Black is a sci-fi thriller series that follows Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany), who discovers that she is part of an illegal human cloning experiment. After realising that she is a clone, Sarah assumes the identity of one of her fellow clones, Elizabeth Childs, and begins to track down more of her ‘sister’ clones. Orphan Black was shot in Toronto, Ontario, and to date, there have been five seasons of the show. All five series of Orphan Black are available to view on Netflix – along with a range of fellow Canadian TV shows. Whilst it was not initially made clear that Orphan Black was based in Canada – an episode in season 5 of the show names Canada as the location.

Schitt’s Creek
TV sitcom Schitt’s Creek follows the wealthy Rose family, who have to relocate having been defrauded of their fortune, eventually settling in Schitt’s Creek – a small town and their sole remaining asset. The series ran for over five years, winning numerous awards, with its final season landing all seven major comedy awards at the 72nd Emmy Awards. Schitt’s Creek was filmed on location in the small town of Goodwood, Ontario – which, as a result of the show’s success – has become a tourist hot spot. The interior shots in Schitt’s Creek were also shot in Canada, with Toronto’s Pinewood, Dufferin Gate, and Revival Studios all used to film different seasons of the show.

The Shows That Have Gotten Me Through the Pandemic

January 18, 2021 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Back in March 2020 when Toronto went into its first lockdown, my Netflix list had over 200 titles. And that was just a single streaming service. But with everything closed and nothing to do, streaming was the very thing I could tackle. And so I began the various marathons that have carried me through the pandemic. Focusing on one show at a time, I resolved to get through as much of the backlog as I could and enjoy new series as they were released. These shows have entertained me throughout the last 10+ months. And while there have been some misses (I just couldn’t get into THE OFFICE despite giving it 3 seasons), I’ve got some recommendations for you. There’s a mixture of old and new shows here, as well as comedies and dramas and scripted shows and documentaries.

12 MONKEYS (Canada – Amazon Prime Video; US – Hulu): I’m so sad that I slept on this show when it originally aired on Syfy. The 1995 movie of the same name starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt is a jumping off point for the show, but I dare say I enjoyed the show far more than the movie. A man, James Cole, travels back in time before a pandemic and encounters Dr. Cassandra Railly, a virologist whose message in the future leads Cole and his time-travel machine creating mentor, Katarina Jones, to believe that she can help them stop the pandemic from happening. The show flits between various years and thoroughly examines the issue of causality in a way that doesn’t annoy me because it actually takes the time to do it thoughtfully. There’s a cast of thoroughly interesting supporting characters (I dare you to tell me Deacon doesn’t go from villain to your favorite character by the end of the show). And while this is an extremely involved serialized show, there’s also some almost stand-alone episodes that involve a time period of the week trip (the episode involving an auction house heist is particularly delightful). In addition, I had heard the series finale of 12 MONKEYS described as one of the best and I’m happy to confirm that it absolutely is. Because this is a show about causality, the finale wraps up the entire show in an incredibly satisfying way. And it made me cry.

BRIDGERTON (Netflix): BRIDGERTON is GOSSIP GIRL meets PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. It’s a guilty pleasure, but it’s also fun. Taking place in the 1800s, the first Shonda Rhimes show for Netflix focuses on a small group of wealthy families who are navigating the “season” in London, England. There’s fake relationships, forbidden romances and a newsletter that reveals all of the secrets of the “ton” (the wealthy families that surrounded the palace court). BRIDGERTON isn’t flawless by any means, but it’s still enjoyable in a way that soap operas are. There’s gorgeous costumes, delightful language, and wealthy intrigue. While a second season hasn’t yet been announced, there’s a good chance it will happen. That said, the first season comes to an end that feels satisfying. And the good news is, you learn the identify of Lady Whistledown, the writer of that newsletter.

THE BOYS (Amazon Prime Video): THE BOYS isn’t the MCU. While Captain America and Thor may be virtuous heroes, the superheroes of THE BOYS are psychopathic or the bad guys. Season 2 of THE BOYS came out during the pandemic, and while I didn’t initially enjoy it as much as the first season, the show did pick up a lot as the season went on. Regardless, THE BOYS is an interesting show (assuming you can stomach the gore). And Homelander, one of the most powerful and popular of the superheroes, remains one of the most complex and interesting characters on television. He’s played by Antony Starr, who clearly gives all he has to the role. What thrilled me the most about the second season was actually the set-up for the third season, which now puts our actual heroes in interesting positions that they (and we) hadn’t foreseen.

THE CROWN (Netflix): Admit it, you’ve been waiting for the Princess Diana season of THE CROWN this whole time. Technically I’ve been watching THE CROWN since the beginning and I’ve enjoyed this show immensely. But we’ve all been waiting for the introduction of Princess Di. And yet, there’s an undercurrent of despair that hangs over the fourth season. Not only because of the overall subject matter (watching Diana’s struggle as she adjusts to the royal family and a loveless marriage is difficult), but because we know how this fairy tale tragically ends. Emma Corrin embodies Diana so well, down to her very mannerisms, and she generally nails her voice too. Gillian Anderson is also terrific as Margaret Thatcher. And while her voice and manner of speaking can become occasionally tiresome, I admire her absolute commitment to the role. While THE CROWN has always been a series focused on women (after all, the show’s most important character is female), season 4 seems to be focused on three women – Elizabeth, Margaret and Diana — in a way that explores each of their powerful roles in the monarchy and on the world stage.

MCMILLIONS (Canada – Crave; US – HBO Max): Are you familiar with the McDonald’s Monopoly game contest? Well, over the entire 1990s, that contest was primarily rigged by a security manager who had access to the game pieces. As he distributed prizes to a group of friends and acquaintances, his actions eventually caught the notice of the FBI. This documentary series is beyond delightful with a crazy cast of characters, even though the subject matter can be a bit tragic as people get their comeuppance. FBI agent Doug Mathews is also the best part about this show and his eclectic personality will never fail to make you smile. This is a quick binge overall at only six episodes, but this crazy story will keep you hooked from the first moment to the last.

UPLOAD (Amazon Prime Video): The best show to ever deal with the afterlife will always be THE GOOD PLACE, but UPLOAD comes in a close second. Robbie Amell, previously of various CW shows, really becomes a star in this series, showing he can do both comedy and drama. The show centers around a futuristic world, where people can “upload” their consciousness at their time of  death to various virtual “resorts” that will allow them to continue living out their days for eternity. Amell’s Nathan is guided through the afterlife by technician Nora, who also seems to develop a bit of a crush on her charge. Along the way it deals with issues of classism and what death really means in the grand scheme of humanity, all under the guise of a pretty humorous comedy series. There’s also the question of exactly how Amell’s character died, lending an air of mystery to the series. The good news is the show has already been renewed for a second season.

WANDAVISION (Disney+): Technically only a few episodes of WANDAVISION have aired at the time of this article, but I’m so delighted to finally have some new MCU content for the first time in a long time. The pandemic pushed back Marvel’s plans to unveil its slate of shows that was originally supposed to debut in 2020. And while I’m eager to watch THE FALCOLN AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (originally the first MCU show that was supposed to be released), WANDAVISION is an absolute delight. You can tell that Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany are living their best acting lives in this off-the-wall series that pays homage to beloved shows such as BEWITCHED and (in episodes to come) THE BRADY BUNCH. And while some people might think that this unusual series is a departure from the MCU, it’s clear there’s an undercurrent of something sinister behind the live audience laughter. I, for one, can’t wait to see how it ends.

Review: VIZIO’s 2017 M50-E1 SmartCast TV

December 19, 2017 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Confession: I will purchase any gadget I can control with my phone.

Light bulbs, thermostats, doorbells, garage door openers, sous vide cookers. Seriously. If you can control it with your phone, there is a very good possibility that I own it! So it should come as no surprise when a marketing agency offered your very own TV Addict a free television in exchange for a review on theTVaddict.com, I said yes. Not so much for the “free” aspect*, but rather because VIZIO’s 2017 M50-E1 SmartCast TV big selling point is an accompanying iPhone and Android app. But more on that in a bit.

*** Full Disclosure: While this television was in fact offered to me free in exchange for a review on theTVaddict.com, it did in fact cost me several hundreds of dollars to ship to my hometown of Toronto Canada. So when I say I like this television, I actually mean it!

So what did I think of the VIZIO’s 2017 M50-E1 SmartCast?

Well for starters, it’s beautiful and everything I need in a television. It’s flat, thin, and has the smallest of bezels around the border of the screen. The television is also state-of-the-art in that its offers picture in 4k + HDR. And while I don’t pretend to be an expert in the area of resolution or display, I do spend a lot of time in front of a screen, and found the display delivered high contrast, deep blacks and an overall eye-pleasing picture quality. All for a very reasonable price. (see: Bestbuy)

But honestly, what separates a television from the pack these days when most of them provide a quality picture at a reasonable price? In a word: Smartcast!

The Vizio SmartCast app turns any mobile device (iOS and Android) into an amazing touchscreen remote. It not only allows you to set up and control your television, but serves as an all-in-one place to find your favourite shows and movies. Entertainment from Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Vudu, Google Play, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, Showtime and many more can all be found built in within the beautifully designed and surprisingly intuitive app.

Cooler still, I am no longer at the mercy of my cable company’s antiquated and technologically neutered set-top box that may-or-may-not have been developed in the 90’s! Thanks to SmartCast, I simply open the app, search for my favourite show and cast it directly to the television. Suffice it to say, Smartcast alone is truly worth the price of admission and not just because I no longer have to replace dead “AAA” batteries or waste time searching through the couch cushions for the dreaded remote.

Also working in this TV’s favour, it’s somewhat future proof thanks to built-in compatibility with Google Home and the Google Assistant. Alas, these features were not something I could test because I’m already firmly planted on Team Amazon Echo’s corner as of this posting, but it’s nice to know should I decide to switch the option is there.

Vizio’s M50-E1 can be found at many of your favourite retails including Best Buy, Walmart, B&H, Dell, Costco and Sam’s Club.
