Which Netflix Hits Will Put Gamers in a Spin?

July 8, 2024 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

The entertainment world, in all its diverse glory, is actually smaller than you think. Creative minds think alike, which is why TV directors inspire their movie counterparts, and onscreen icons influence game creators.

The crossover between TV shows, movies, and casino games is one of the most interesting. Spawned by the rise of online casinos, movie, and TV-themed slots have become a popular part of the slot gaming sector. Indeed, you only have to look at the industry’s largest platforms to see how onscreen icons have been used by game developers.

For example, the online casino at Paddy Power contains a few hundred slots, many of which contain a classic mix of bars, bells, and fruits. However, in line with modern trends, slots such as Rocky and Gladiator replace classic symbols with imagery from popular movies and TV shows. Add themed bonuses to the mix, and these slots provide a multifaceted form of entertainment.

Reach New Audiences with Onscreen Icons

Software developers base their latest creations on modern hits. With TV shows and movies obtaining legendary status all the time, there’s plenty of room for new slots. The question, therefore, is which current TV shows have the depth and mainstream appeal to become hits in the casino gaming world?

Using the list of shows being released on Netflix Canada in July 2024, there are a few credible candidates. Jack Reachercould easily use his kick-ass skills to smash symbols into winning combinations. There are plenty of action-movie slots based on characters such as Robocop and Terminator. A bonus round where Reacher displays his hand-to-hand combat skills by knocking objects out of the air would definitely be fun.

Spinning Players into New Dimensions

Another Netflix Canada release that could become an online casino hit is Another Self Season 2. The sci-fi aspect of this seemingly normal show opens up the possibility of some unique features. For example, the fact that Sara (one of the main characters) can travel to alternate universes and mean parallel versions of herself is interesting.

Perhaps a software developer could create a bonus game where players can choose to enter different settings. Each setting could have unique symbols that open up portals capable of taking you to different parts of a galaxy filled with prizes. This, of course, is just an idea, but it’s the type of thing casino developers think about when they’re creating games. Moreover, it’s why TV and movie-theme slots have become popular.

Slots that Tell a Story

They have ready-made storylines that people know. This familiarity, combined with the scope to add themed features, gives developers plenty to work with. The end products are layered slot games packed with engaging images, animations, sounds, and interactive elements.

Prizes are obviously important when we’re talking about casino games, but entertainment is just as important. Games rich with features can keep players engaged with or without prizes. That’s why the latest TV shows and movies could be coming to a casino lobby near you very soon.

Best 5 Gambling Movies Made in Canada

December 13, 2021 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Gambling movies often provide viewers an exciting storyline that appeals to both casino enthusiasts and movie fans who have never played a casino game. And Canadians who like to visit gambling sites like the ones here would be proud to know that some of these wonderful movies were produced in Canada.

In this article, we take a look at some of the best gambling movies made in Canada. Here is our top 5 list:

1. Lucky Girl
Lucky Girl, also known as My Daughter’s Secret Life, is a 2001 film about a girl named Kaitlyn who gradually gets hooked on gambling. We can sense her ambition to always be correct from the beginning of the film, as well as her delight when she wins a life-changing prize thanks to her magic-wand lottery ticket.

When she attempts to gather money for a vacation to Amsterdam with her pals, she becomes more involved in gambling. Kaitlyn begins to wager on sports more regularly, which leads to a string of poor mistakes. The film starred Elisha Cuthbert and Sherry Miller, and was directed by John Fawcett.

2. Cold Deck
“Cold Deck” is among the best 5 gambling movies and most recent film on our list, having been released in 2015. The plot of the film, directed by Zack Bernbaum, follows the life of Bobby, a poker player

Bobby, an addicted gambler, lives with Audrey, his ill mother, who detests his gambling habit because gambling caused his father’s downfall. Bobby is dating Kim, a waitress at Chips’ gaming establishment, where he spends most of his time playing poker.

As Audrey’s bills mount and Bobby’s losing streak continues, Bobby’s buddy Ben offers that Bobby participates in a high-stakes poker tournament that he has heard about and split the earnings with Audrey. They steal a car to collect enough money for the buy-in, convinced that the bankers will be easy prey.

Bobby then steals his mother’s life savings to meet the high-stake of the poker game. We ten see him develop a strong connection with a violent character named Turk. This film is an emotional rollercoaster that will be ideal for a relaxing movie night at home.

3. Owning Mahowny
Those who enjoy visiting the greatest real money casinos in Canada will be enthralled by Owning Mahowny, a first-rate Canadian gambling film released in 2003

When you take away all the glamor and glamour of gambling and concentrate on the crushing, stifling addiction, you get Owning Mahowny. This film depicts the real tale of a Canadian bank manager (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who stole money from his bank and used it to make a series of risky bets in Atlantic City.

Hoffman is brilliant in the role, enigmatic and pathetic in equal measure, a man who is helpless to control himself but does his best to hold on for as long as he can.

The film is so tuned in to Hoffman’s wavelength that it’s almost too far away from the audience: his Mahowny is so engrossed in his thoughts that we can’t get in. However, this is arguably the closest a film can come to capturing the fear of having a gambling addiction.
This is a real tale of a bank worker who stole over $10 million from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce to fund his gambling addiction.

4. The Last Casino
If you’re interested in the history of gambling and want to see a bit off-the-beaten-path film that may have escaped your notice up until this point, go no further than The Last Casino. This film is a 2004 drama with humorous parts that digs deep into the world of gambling and, in particular, Blackjack.

The tale of the MIT Blackjack Team is widely referenced in The Last Casino. Bill Kaplan couched the MIT Blackjack Team, which consisted of a group of students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Kaplan postponed his admission to Harvard University in the hopes of developing a mathematical model that would help him win at blackjack

This is a film devoted to blackjack fans, akin to the Hollywood film ’21.’ It is the story of a professor who, despite being barred from casinos in Ontario and Quebec, taught three students how to count cards to help him transform $1000 into $35,000 and address his financial issues over nine months.

5. Dead Heat – A 2002 Crime Comedy Drama Film
Albert Paul ‘Pally’ LaMarr (Kiefer Sutherland) is a 35-year-old police officer in Boston who has recently had a heart attack while confronting a robber, causing him to retire. His career loss left him with a hole that led him to desperation and made him consider suicide.

Pally’s half-brother Ray LaMarr (Anthony LaPaglia) is summoned by his wife Charlotte LaMarr (Radha Mitchell) to visit him in the hopes of cheering him up. Ray is a small-time thief who persuades Pally to invest in a sure-bet long-shot racing horse.

Ray’s newly discovered jockey Tony LaRoche (Lothaire Bluteau) is a gambling addict who is in debt to a Mob leader Frank Finnegan, and Pally finds himself in over his head (Daniel Benzali).

By association, Ray and Pally become culpable, and Tony’s obligation is now theirs. Pally is entangled in a web of murder, mobsters, and failed romances. The stakes of their new horse succeeding have just skyrocketed.

Conclusion
There is a plethora of fantastic classic gambling films that you can explore. You’ve probably been seeking the greatest casino movies to watch with your gambling buddies. The film reviewed above offers the much-needed thrill, entertainment, and lessons to both gambling and movie fans.

3 Great Netflix Shows Inspired by Games

September 14, 2021 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Video games are a fairly new addition to pop culture, as compared to books, magazines, comics, films, TV programmes, etc. Despite being younger though, games have inspired creative media, as well having been inspired by them. For example, Netflix Originals such as Narcos and Orange is the New Black have their own licensed slot games now. According to this Bonus.ca article about Spin Casino, all their new members get 50 free spins on making a deposit of just $1. Which means that we can try out some of the best pop culture inspired slots available online by just spending a dollar!

On the other hand, the list of Netflix shows and movies that originated from popular games is much longer. In this post, we will provide a brief overview of some awesome Netflix shows that were either inspired by a real-life video game, or were built on the premise of gaming in general. Movies will be excluded from the list here, although many of the game-inspired films are streaming on Netflix right now. They were not made by Netflix though, so they cannot be included as a part of the main post.

The Witcher
It is not unfair to call Netflix’s The Witcher a show that was inspired almost entirely by the Witcher series of games, despite the CD ProjeKt Red games themselves being developed on the tales of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Everything from the way Henry Cavill looks and acts in the series, to the entire fantasy medieval theme of the show itself is heavily inspired by the games.

Could the show have been done better? Most gamers and fans of the novel/short story series would agree on that part, but nobody can complain about the dedication and faithfulness with which Henry Cavill embraced the Legendary monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia, aka The White Wolf. Despite the production crew doing their best to not let it be so, Cavill’s Geralt is the highlight of this show, just as he should be.

Dragon’s Dogma
Dragon’s Dogma was surprisingly good, especially since very few viewers were even expecting the show to come out as suddenly as it did. Although the animated show from last year has been created in a different aesthetic art style than the original game, it mostly stays faithful to the source material’s core storyline and fundamentals about the Arisen. It’s a tale of evil, heart-stealing (literally!) dragons, undead warriors, mystical creatures and more, but above all else, Dragon’s Dogma is a serious tale of revenge.

More importantly, Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma is one of its best new shows for the matured audience, complete with well-developed characters, gory violence, and a dark, medieval theme that delves into much darker territories at times than the game. All those aspects work really well within the show and fans are hoping for a second season soon. Can it become even better than Netflix’s most popular game-inspired show, aka Castlevania? We will just have to wait and see.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light
Very few video game franchises in the history of video games have been as successful and popular as the Final Fantasy series. Spanning close to 35-years, Square Enix has so far released 15 Final Fantasy games as part of the main series, but the show has also inspired numerous spin offs, side-games, mobile games, blatant rips-offs, comics, manga, books, movies, serials and animations along the line! Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Netflix decided to step in and add their own name to the list of Final Fantasy inspired media producers this year.

If you are familiar with the Japanese RPGs, then you are probably expecting a plot that involves Warriors of Light saving the planet from Elemental Fiends. However, that’s not exactly what’s happening in Netflix’s live action series, Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light. Instead, it starts off as a family drama with comic elements, as we see Akio trying to rebuild the relationship he had with his estranged father.

They still live together though, so he decides to surprise him by restabilising the only real rapport the two had in his younger days. As you can probably guess, the father and son duo loved their Final Fantasy games and used to have loads of fun together while playing them. Now Akio is trying to secretly befriend his father in the online world of Final Fantasy XIV and the show does have its moments.

Outside of Netflix, video games and the gaming theme itself has inspired so many movies and shows. Of course, most of them were not even nearly as good, but at least there will still be video-game inspired content for you to watch once you are done with these shows on Netflix. Give Mortal Combat (1995), Wreck-It Ralph, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), and Resident Evil: Vendetta a try just for the fun of it.
