SUPERNATURAL Mid-Season Finale Recap: Trapped in a Cage

December 9, 2015 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

supernatural

Amara was all grown up when the mid-season finale of SUPERNATURAL began and she was decided to kill a group of devoutly religious people for worshipping God, hoping to provoke a reaction from her brother.

Sam, meanwhile, continued to have visions of Lucifer in the cage. Seeking answers, he prayed and received a burning bush in response. Dean hated this plan and didn’t want Sam to go anywhere near the cage, but Sam was adamant. So the brothers called on Crowley, who was also reluctant to lead them to the cage until they told him this may be the only way to defeat the Darkness. When Crowley asked why Amara kept sparing Dean, he turned the attention back to the Lucifer situation. When Dean said he didn’t want his brother anywhere near danger, Crowley suggested there may be another way: the Book of the Damned.

Back in Crowley’s lair, he greeted his newly re-captured mother. Enter the Winchesters, who told Rowena that she should partner with them to help defeat the Darkness. But what’s in it for Rowena? Crowley promised to call off his assassins if she agreed to help and the Winchesters promised limited access to the codex.

As the Winchesters and Crowley hatched their plan, Amara sought her brother in a church. But praying to him got no response and she argued with a priest about God’s goodness. And then she decided to go on a killing and soul-feeding spree as she desecrated God’s house. Meanwhile, more of heaven’s middle-management gathered to figure out a way to defeat the Darkness without God’s help.

As Sam supervised Rowena and her access to the Book, Dean headed out to investigate the rash of murders that Amara was conducting. But Dean started to get a weird vibe just as he saw Amara again, distracting him from Sam’s call. She swept them off to a pier for their latest reunion as Sam, Rowena and Crowley headed off to limbo to summon Lucifer to a cage that Rowena had set up there.

Amara explained to Dean how God had forced her hand by ignoring her, while Lucifer was summoned to the cage. He greeted Sam and Crowley as Rowena fanboyed over him. Sam told him that the Darkness had been released and that that God was nowhere in sight. Although, he did tell him that God was giving him visions to seek out Lucifer. But was Lucifer on board to help? Well, Lucifer insisted that he could better help if he had a vessel….perhaps Sam himself?

As Dean snapped out of his stupor around Amara, he found he couldn’t kill her with his blade. She told him she couldn’t be resisted, so he should just give in. After she kissed him, she told him that they were bonded and that it was destiny. “We will become one,” she warned Dean. Enter the middle-management angels, who had come to kill Amara. Dean warned them to leave, but Amara just smited them down. And that got God’s attention. Just as the lightening and thunder started up, Amara sent Dean away.

Dean found himself back in the park where Amara had found him earlier, with no one else the wiser that something was amiss. And down in limbo, Sam refused to be Lucifer’s vessel again. But when Sam turned his back to the cage, the warding sigils failed and Sam found himself trapped inside with Lucifer. He told Lucifer this was playing out as God had told him it would be, but Lucifer revealed that when the Darkness descended it had damaged the cage. And God wasn’t sending Sam messages — Lucifer had been. “It was always just me,” Lucifer told him. “So I guess I am your only hope.” As we zoomed in on a terrified Sam, we faded to black…..

SUPERNATURAL: Ruth Connell on Rowena, the Mega Coven and the Winchesters

December 8, 2015 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

ruth

When we last saw Rowena on SUPERNATURAL, she had cured Castiel from the attack dog spell she had put on him at the end of season 10. She was also still in possession of the Book of the Damned and had escaped the Winchesters. She’ll be making a return appearance in the mid-season finale this week and during a visit to the SUPERNATURAL set in Vancouver, Ruth Connell spoke to journalists about Rowena’s experience with the coven, the Winchesters and her thoughts on the Darkness.

The Mega Coven. “I keep getting people offering to be recruits for the mega coven on Twitter, so I’m going to keep running with that,” Ruth told us with a laugh when asked about Rowena’s failed attempt to create a Mega Coven to rival the Grand Coven (which had revoked her membership many years ago). But will Rowena continue to pursue that path? “I think the next time you see [Rowena], it’s more Winchester-oriented. Let’s just say that.”

Why does Rowena Allow the Winchesters to Live? “I think she secretly thinks they’re handsome,” Ruth joked. “Or maybe that’s just me. The thing is, at the end of last season Rowena has everything. She has the Book of the Damned, she has the codex, she has the codebreaker. And it’s like ‘what do you do with that power’? I think that’s kind of touching is you still see her going down the old route she was always doing. It’s all about the coven. And in the episode we just filmed [episodes 11.09 and 11.10], you get a bit more of the backstory. You hear more about the human element to this and [she’s got all this power, but she’s not killing the Winchesters and she can’t let go of the coven idea].”

What’s Rowena’s Opinion of The Darkness? When we saw Rowena in “The Bad Seed”, she questioned what evil force Dean had unleashed on the world and got a sense of what the Darkness was by reading him. “I’m like everyone else, trying to work out [what this force is] as I go. Personally, my take on it is that evil maybe finds other evil intriguing [and maybe Rowena is thinking] ‘how can I use this for my own benefit?’ So I’m slightly intrigued.” So is Rowena not as fearful as others about the Darkness? “She’s maybe not as fearful as she should be. You’ll see if it comes to bite her in the ass later.”

Will Mother and Son Reunite Soon? “I have just been shooting with Mark Sheppard. You’ll see why we’re in each other’s way again.”

Rowena’s Thoughts on Castiel. Rowena didn’t have that much interaction with Cas in “The Bad Seed”, but Ruth explained that at the end of last season Rowena was “kind of fascinated by him, like in the way that you want to pull a dragonfly’s wings off. If you’re that kind of kid. I leave him f****d up at the end. I think she’s fascinated in that way by him, but not enough to let him get in her own way.” She did hint that “Misha and I just had the funnest scene I think it’s possible to have. I wish I could say [more]. I’m going to put 50 pence on the fact that it’s in the teaser.”

A Group Meeting. “We’ve just done the first scene where all five of us were together,” Ruth said, hinting that a big group scene is coming in the January premiere.

SUPERNATURAL Mid-season Finale Photos: A Dangerous Plan

December 4, 2015 By Clarissa 5 Comments

supernatural

Amara is resurfacing in the mid-season finale of SUPERNATURAL and this time she’s going to be making a big move. After escaping Crowley’s control, Amara decides to unleash her power on a local town and its people and issues a shocking challenge. Is she calling out for God to face her again? Meanwhile, Dean is still going to be digging into his connection to Amara to better understand it — and hopefully figure out if it can be broken.

And Sam and Crowley are going to make an unlikely duo when they team up in the episode. According to the network, their plan “could have disastrous consequences”. Given the fact that Sam seems determined to get into the cage to talk to Lucifer, we’re thinking disastrous consequences are just the tip of the iceberg. Mark Pellegrino is reprising his role as Lucifer, but we’re not sure if Sam just sees him in a vision or actually talks to the devil in the cage.

SUPERNATURAL: Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles Tease the Mid-season Finale

December 3, 2015 By Clarissa 2 Comments

supernatural

Sam Winchester has visions of the devil on SUPERNATURAL. And, from the looks of the preview for the mid-season finale, the devil is making a reappearance in the next episode, just in time to leave us with one hell (no pun intended) of a cliffhanger over the holidays.

When we visited the SUPERNATURAL set in Vancouver, the cast and crew were filming episode 11.10, which is first episode to air after the holiday hiatus. We spoke to stars Jared Paladaecki and Jensen Ackles, who shared what’s to come in both the mid-season finale and the January return.

“Obviously you can see that we’re a little beat up,” Padalecki points out in the video below, indicating that a big fight is likely to come in episode 11.10. “I said this the other day, in the makeup trailer, that these two episodes [11.09 and 11.10] are my favorite episodes of SUPERNATURAL in a long, long time. I love the twists and turns, [none of which he could spoil for us]. I wouldn’t expect the brothers to go where they go until at least the season finale, but we get right to it. And the brothers are very committed to fighting alongside each other in getting rid of the Darkness, in trying to figure out what it’s going to take and how to do it and kind of going through all alleys and channels.”

“Sam starts exploring these visions,” Ackles explained. “And he starts trying to figure out who is talking to him and what they mean. He kind of takes it upon himself to go there without Dean and kind of leaves me in the dust and so, then of course, Dean has to follow. But what that does is make for some interesting alliances.”

What, exactly, does that mean? Well, if you watched the most recent episode and saw the preview for the mid-season finale, it looks that Sam is headed towards the cage. According to the synopsis for the upcoming episode, “Sam and Crowley come up with a plan that could have disastrous consequences”, so it’s likely that Sam asks Crowley to help him get to Lucifer, convinced that the devil has the answers that he needs.

We also know, thanks to Padalecki and Ackles, that Billie the reaper will be making a return appearance in episode 11.10. Will Dean use her to follow Sam into Hell (via Purgatory) or could she give him valuable intel about the Darkness? Whichever it is, Ackles said that she is one of “interesting alliances”.

Meanwhile, we also know in episode 11.09 that Amara will unleash her power on a town and its people as she issues a challenge. And Dean will be trying to better understand his connection with her. How long is he going to keep that connection from his brother? It’s “to be determined”, Ackles had warned in our other interview, indicating that Sam may not know throughout episodes 9 and 10. But Padalecki said that in the two upcoming episodes “we’ll have some other cool characters that have interesting things to say about the Darkness.” Ackles also added that we’ll get more of an indication of “what she is and where she comes from [and] how she ties in to the whole thing.”

Watch the interview with Padalecki and Ackles below and tune in to the mid-season finale of SUPERNATURAL  on December 9 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. You can also watch fun “outtakes” from the interview with Padalecki and Ackles on our YouTube channel.

SUPERNATURAL Mid-Season Preview: To Hell and Back

December 2, 2015 By Clarissa 2 Comments

supernatural

Sam was surprised when his childhood imaginary friend, Sully, showed up on this week’s SUPERNATURAL. It turns out Sully was a real creature (a Zanna) that helps guide and befriend children. While Dean was initially skeptical about his reappearance, he got on board quickly when Sully showed them why he came: he needed help in figuring out who was killing other imaginary friends like him. Dean eventually headed out to find the murderer when one of the victims survived, but he was captured and Sam and Sully were lured to him. It turns out that the killer was committing these murders because she blamed Sully for her sister’s death. But Sully’s acceptance of his own death and Dean’s kind words about him convinced the killer to let go of her anger towards the Zanna.

Meanwhile, we got flashbacks to Sam’s childhood with Sully when his father and Dean were off hunting and were reluctant to take young Sam along. While Sam and Sully contemplated what Sam could do with his future, Sammy told Sully to leave when his father finally called and invited him along on the hunt.

In the upcoming mid-season finale, Amara unleashes her power on some poor, unsuspecting townspeople. While Dean tries to figure out more about his bond with her, Sam and Crowley team up to do something really crazy: get Sam to Lucifer’s cage to get some answers about the Darkness. And Mark Pellegrino is making a reappearance as Lucifer in one of Sam’s visions!

SUPERNATURAL Set Visit: Go Behind the Scenes of Visual Effects

December 2, 2015 By Clarissa 1 Comment

supernatural

“Our job here at Visual Effects is to try and accomplish anything that is too dangerous, too expensive or just impossible,” explained VFX Supervisor Mark Meloche during our visit to the SUPERNATURAL set in Vancouver.

The VFX group on SUPERNATURAL work on a lot of aspects of individual episodes. Sometimes what they do is very small and entails them fixing minor aspects of a scene. For example, they shot a scene in front of a sign that had an axe flashing up and down, looking like it was moving. But the sign actually broke during filming, so they fixed the positioning in VFX because it would be too costly and time-consuming to re-shoot the scene just because of a broken sign. They also handle a lot of “digital makeup” shots, such as the angel healings, and bridge the gap between prosthetics and the final scene — for example, Kevin’s burnt out eyes was a combination of both prosthetics and VFX.

If you’re interested in what goes on behind the scenes of VFX at SUPERNATURAL, here’s a few tidbits for you:

sn-2x02Making Dean Look Younger

Back in early season 10, the VFX crew de-aged Dean to create a flashback scene. They began by searching out younger photos of Jensen Ackles. They also had to remove the beard/scruff that present-day Jensen was wearing while filming the flashback scene. Present-day Dean needed to have a scruff for continuity for scenes the next day, so they couldn’t shave it off for the flashback. “So we had to erase the bead. We’ve done a skin fix on him, we’ve taken out all of his character lines — actors don’t get wrinkles, they get character lines — and we increased the size of his eyes by 2%. That was the route that we went in order to accomplish what he looks like 10 or 12 years ago.”

Burnt Angel Wings

A lot of fans have noticed that a staple of the show — the angel wings burnt on to the ground wherever their dead bodies fall — isn’t something you see on the show anymore. So we asked Meloche if that was because of timing. He said that’s actually a decision from the producers/showrunners. “We’ve had three showrunners on the show. Each one has a slightly different take on the show. Those shots, although we can accomplish them no problem, those are things that, over time, have come in and out of the show. So those aren’t the things that we’re avoiding, those are things that…because it’s been established that we know the angels are dead and whatnot [they are just not done any longer]. For the die-hards, I understand that it can be confusing.” He also explained that “we see how our visual effects fit into the situation we’re in right here. Jeremy [Carver] is looking at it how that situation situation fits into the entire arc of the show or the entire season.”

smokeDemon Smoke

According to Meloche, the demon smoke on SUPERNATURAL has “gone through three iterations. The first you’ll all recall from season 1, [which] was very minimal and that was the best they could do [at the time and was done by an external company]. Then once we got our hands on it [in house in season 2] we created a new smoke that could turn and weave a little bit, but it wasn’t that controllable. As of about three years ago we designed this new smoke rig [and] we can make this thing dance. It can do tight turns.” The photo to the right is from the season 3 episode “Jus in Bello”, which would have been the second iteration.

Fire

Fire is used in a lot of different ways on SUPERNATURAL. In the season 10 episode “About a Boy”, the evil witch was burned in an oven of fire. Meloche explained that it was “a stunt woman that you’re seeing [inside the oven], wailing around. But as far as the flames go, all of the flames in [the stove] are computer generated [CG] and we’ve got the stunt person banging on the door.” The show has also occasionally lit people on fire. In the early days they did full body burns as a stunt. “The problem with the body burns is they’re very dangerous and they take a lot of time to accomplish. And the flames themselves tend to be very tall and wick-y because the amount of heat that’s generated tends to suck up all the flames in straight lines. [Doing CG flames]  tends to give us a better look and it’s way more controllable as well.” Finally, there’s the rings of holy fire that the Winchesters often use to trap angels. Meloche said that he gets the “why don’t you just put the actors in a ring of fire?” question all the time. “The problem is that when you’re surrounded by the ring of fire, it’s eating up the oxygen around you and pulling all the air up and in, so you can actually get an overdose of CO2, so we tend not to do that”.

How Much Lead Time does VFX Get?

They actually get a bit of a head start because they start filming months before the show actually begins airing. Meloche also explained that sometimes they do R&D and prep VFX shots on episodes that haven’t even filmed yet. Also, because “the show is not a huge show as far as the number of [VFX] shots we have to do, so the resources that we have and the time we have for a particular episode can be pushed towards something that’s much more creative and much more fun. So we’re actually adding in pieces [of VFX to some episodes] that weren’t even scripted.”

charlie

Merging Charlie

“Instead of creating a model of Charlie [in the season 10 episode ‘There’s No Place Like Home’], we used something called photogrammetry, where she was in costume laying down. I photographed her from multiple angles [and took] probably over 100 photos. That’s fed into a separate piece of software that actually creates the model of her” and allows them to air scenes like the one to the right. They’re going to be utilizing this technique in an upcoming episode as well and Meloche says those are small techniques that move things along quicker.

Demon Eyes

They used to use contact lenses on the actors in the earlier demon scenes. But as they were acting and emoting they would move their eyes and tend to look around and the corners of their own eyes would show, so now they use VFX.

Flashback Film

The show used to be shot on film, but it’s now entirely digital. When the show utilizes flashbacks (especially in the “previously on” segments at the beginning), they “process to get the grain out so they don’t look like they were shot in 1952. I’m not saying they do, normally, but when you’re [putting] them back-to-back with a digital clean image, we tend to help clean that up a little bit.”

clownContinuity Fixes

The VFX team also helps with continuity issues. For example, in the episode “Plush”, [a clown] was sprayed with blood and it shows up in a later scene, but for this particular shot it wasn’t emulated. When you’re spraying blood around you can’t make it go exactly where you need it to go. So [one of their VFX artists] is actually taking a shot that I took of the mask with the blood on it and putting it back on to an earlier shot for continuity reasons. The irony of this is that if we do our jobs right, no one will know we did our job.”

Finally, for all of you tech savvy people, in a special room in the VFX trailer there is what’s known as the “render farm”, as well as digital storage for all 11 seasons. According to Meloche, he thinks they’re up to 30 petabytes (see Wikipedia for an example, but it’s huge).

SUPERNATURAL airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Sheriff Donna returned to SUPERNATURAL this week when she came across a strange case of a man with a giant bunny head killing someone and called on the Winchesters for help. As it turns out, a ghost was possessing these strange — and scary looking — costumes and causing their wearers to kill in revenge after the owner’s own murder.

SUPERNATURAL will be on a break for a week, but when it returns in early December we’ll see the Winchesters tackle another strange case — this one involving imaginary friends. Sam is surprised to see his old imaginary friend Sully make a return appearance, only this time Dean can see him as well. We’ll be getting flashbacks to a younger version of Sam who befriended Sully when he really needed him.
